Ekaterina Alexandrova v Caty McNally Head to Head
This will be the first time ever that Alexandrova and McNally will be facing off in a competitive fixture.

Alexandrova looked to be in bit of a soup when she lost the first set to Clijsters and then was a break-point down at 5-5 in the second set. She rallied to win that game, broke Clijsters in the next game and then carved out a 6-1 win in the third set to clinch the encounter.
Now while this win would please Alexandrova, there is no doubting she will look at how things have gone in recent tournaments and feel a bit wary going into the rest of the tournament.
A player who started off the season with a title win at the Shenzhen Open by beating Wang Qiang, Garbine Muguruza and Elena Rybakina, then made the third round at the Australian Open and the semifinal at the St. Petersburg Open, has otherwise struggled to make it count.
There was a first round loss at the Qatar Open before the pandemic break but more vitally the return to tennis has been underwhelming for the Russian. She lost in the second round in Palermo, first round in Prague and was then sent packing in the second round at the Cincinnati Open by Christina McHale. Can she do better here?

A Rare Win for McNally
Both McNally and her opponent in the first round Victoria Kuzmova, hadn’t had the best of seasons so far and were eyeing a rare main draw win. And it’s McNally who came through in her opener, winning 6-4, 6-1 in a mere 62 minutes to make it to the second round of the US Open.
With five breaks of serve and just eight unforced errors in the match to her opponent’s one and 22 respectively, McNally was head and shoulders above Kuzmova in that opener.
It was also McNally’s first opening round win since her first round victory at the Australian Open against Samantha Stosur.
McNally now has a new target, her first ever third round appearance in a Grand Slam, following on from back to back second round shows at the US Open last year and the Australian Open this season. The trouble is she is up against a player nearly 100 ranks above her and can crank it up on hard courts if she gets back to her best.
Alexandrova v McNally Prediction & Tip
An Alexandrova win looks most likely given her far superior record even if her form could be a tad better. Still, a win over ‘crowd’ favourite Clijsters should have given her an injection of confidence and she should come through easily here.
