Grigor Dimitrov had a memorable 2019 US Open. Not only was he a semi-finalist, but he also registered a memorable quarter-final victory against Roger Federer, after being down two sets to one. This was his first ever win against Federer, in eight meetings.

It has been an up and down career for Dimitrov- who won the ATP Tour Finals in 2017 and was ranked as high as number three in the world, and fell to as low as number 80 in the rankings in the Summer of 2019. Currently, back up at world number 20, he will be hoping for another good run, here in New York.

2020 was a difficult summer for the Bulgarian, like most of the world, but especially so once he contracted Covid-19 during the Adria Tour, and has shared how challenging the recovery has been. Dimitrov returned to the tour at the Western & Southern Open, but after a win against Ugo Humbert, he lost a close encounter to Marton Fucsovics in the second round.

The 14th seed did well to avenge his 2020 Australian Open loss to Tommy Paul, with a clinical win here in the opener and will now be hoping for a reversal of the result against Fucsovics last week, in the next round.

Fucsovics had a successful junior career, winning the Wimbledon and US Open. Although he has never replicated that success on the professional tour, he has been a consistent performer for a few seasons now. He has been in two ATP finals, winning the German Open in 2018 and runner-up in 2019 in Sofia.

He had a mixed start to 2020. He qualified for Doha and then got to the quarter-finals, and then reached the fourth round in Melbourne, equalling his best ever performance at a Grand Slam. However, he then lost in the first round in his next three events – In Rotterdam, Marseilles, and Dubai.

The Hungarian lost to Filip Krajinovic in the third round at the Western & Southern Open last week, after an impressive win against Dimitrov. He was off to a clinical start here at the US Open in his first round match, and will be hoping to continue the form against Dimitrov.
