Anett Kontaveit v Magda Linette Head to Head
This is an interesting rivalry, with both having played six matches between 2013 and 2017 of which five came at the ITF level. Overall, Linette leads 4-2 while in the only match played at the WTA level – in 2017 Wuhan – Linette had won in straight sets.
That said, their last match came way back in 2017 and since then, Kontaveit has gone ahead and turned things around for herself, having reached a career-best of 14th in the world.

After a stiff first round workout, Kontaveit came back into her own and registered a straightforward 6-4, 6-1 win over Kaja Juvan in the second round of the US Open. In a match which lasted 73 minutes, Kontaveit broke her opponent six times thanks to 25 crashing winners.
Kontaveit, who had earlier made it to the quarterfinal at the Australian Open this year, aided her own cause with just 14 unforced errors to her name, and won 66% of her first serve points.
The Estonian had entered the tournament on he back of a solid showing in both her previous two tournaments – she made the final of the Palermo Open on clay before losing to Fiona Ferro, and then was a quarterfinalist at the Cincinnati Open where she snatched a set off Naomi Osaka before going down to her.
Having reached the fourth round at the US Open on her first trip here in 2015, she has never again emulated that again. A win here against Linette would not only do that but also allow her a chance to potentially avenge the Osaka loss – that’s if Osaka can also defeat Kostyuk in her third round match.

Linette Stretched Again, But Comes Through Too
Things looked to be headed Linette’s way when she grabbed the first set 6-1, but a solid comeback from Danka Kovinic took the match to a third set. And then a thrilling final set went into a tie-breaker again before Linette managed to edge her opponent out.
This followed a three-setter Linette had to endure against the 119th-ranked Maddison Inglis in the first round. Much like in the second round, she had started off with a 6-1 win in the first set but lost her way in the second before coming back in a tight third set to carve out a place in the next stage.
Interestingly, since winning the Hua Hin Open earlier this year, Linette hasn’t won two matches in a row again. She was knocked out in the first round at the Qatar Open, made the second round at Lexington and then crashed out of the opener at the Cincinnati Open too. Not to mention, an exhibition tournament she played during the pandemic break in which she went through a win-loss-win-loss sequence.
