Maria Sakkari v Amanda Anisimova Head to Head
This will be the first time ever Sakkari and Anisimova will be going head to head in a competitive encounter.
Sakkari Stretched Twice, But Comes Through
In the first round it was Stefanie Voegele who pushed Sakkari into a third set before the Greek world number 22 came through in a tough third set 7-5. And things seemed even worse in her second round match against Bernarda Pera as her opponent raced off to a 4-0 lead in the first set.
It was only after Sakkari got herself on board that things settled down a tad for her even as she lost the first set 6-2.
In the second, Sakkari made a tough hold in the very first game, a game which saw four deuces. Things went on serve till 3-3, before Sakkari finally had a chance to break her opponent and she did that and served out the set.
The final set turned completely around for Sakkari, a complete one-way traffic for her as she wrapped up the match by winning it 6-2.
With a fourth round appearance at the Australian Open earlier this year being her best ever at Grand Slams, Sakkari now has the chance to make it two in a row and better her record from last season. Anisimova stands in her way though.
Anisimova Already at Best US Open Showing
While it’s not been plain sailing for Anisimova, the American has already bettered her performance from the previous US Open competitions – she had failed to qualify in her first two editions, made round one and lost in the third and was forced to pull out last year because of a bereavement.
And now she is in the third round with a realistic chance of making the last 16 – something she has already done twice at Grand Slams. The first came at the Australian Open last year where she stunned Aryna Sabalenka en route her fourth round loss to Petra Kvitova.
And that was followed by a semifinal appearance at the French Open, losing to the eventual winner Ash Barty, after having stunned Sabalenka and Simona Halep on her way.
This time around she has beaten Viktoriya Tomova and Katrina Scott but both have been scratchy wins, which is why it might get that much tougher against a far superior opponent.
Sakkari v Anisimova Prediction & Tip
Interestingly, Sakkari is 1/1 to win this as compared to 4/5 for an Anisimova win. Why interesting, because we think Sakkari has a very good chance of beating her American opponent who has been far from her best so far.
Tip: Sakkari to win: 1/1 (bet365)
