Zverev Looking For First Straight Sets Win

Number five seed Alexander Zverev has exhibited promise and talent since 2017 and done well to win three Masters 1000 ATP titles. However, he has not lived up to his billing at the majors and the 2020 Australian Open semi-final remains his best performance at a major.

For the last season and a half, the young German has run into a host of issues on and off the court. Coaching relationships, indifferent form, serving challenges and poor showings at big matches in majors have all been a deterrent resulting in him unable to live up to expectations.

Zverev will be ruing his showing at the Western & Southern Open last week, where he was serving for the match against Andy Murray and ran into serving issues yet once again with a flurry of double faults, resulting in an unexpected loss.

The German had a tough opener against 2017 US Open runner-up South African Kevin Anderson, which went to four sets. However, his next two rounds were expected to be clinical but none were easy wins, with both Brandon Nakashima and Adrian Mannarino taking a set off Zverev, and the number five seed running into issues with his serve yet again.

However, into the round of 16 and now being the highest seed in the top half of the draw after Novak Djokovic with the exit of Stefanos Tsitsipas, Zverev will fancy his chances for a deep run into week two.

Fokina Surprising All & Himself

It has been a tiring but surprisingly positive week for the 21-year-old Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.  He has come up against three much higher ranked and more accomplished opponents in Dennis Novak, Hubert Hurkacz and Cameron Norrie and secured hard fought wins against them all.  These wins are a testament to his grit as the youngster dug deep to grind out these upsets.

The Spaniard had his first notable season last year when he won two challenger titles. He also reached his maiden ATP event semi-finals at Estoril, where he  recorded  his first-ever tour-level win. The Spaniard continued his impressive run and broke into the top 100 of the ATP rankings. He also qualified for the season-ending Next Gen ATP Finals to cap off a brilliant year.

Although the shortened 2020 season has not been an overly consistent one for Fokina, he will be happy having made it to the middle Sunday of a major already.

Zverev v Fokina Prediction & Tip

While both players have expended considerable amount of energy getting to the round of 16, Zverev starts as a strong favorite given his experience and superior ranking. Young Spaniard Fokina has already exceeded all expectations and been involved in a number of long matches, and it remains to be seen how much is left in the tank.

Expect a spirited fight by the Spaniard, but Zverev to have his first smooth ride of the tournament thus far.

Tip: Zverev to win in three sets: 6/1 (bet365)
