Matteo Berrettini v Andrey Rublev Head to Head

On the tour, these two players have met four times and Berrettini leads 3-1. Rublev did win their most recent outing at the Thiem’s 7 Invitational exhibition tournament to make it 3-2, while his only win over his Italian opponent in serious matches came at the Marseille Open last year.

Interestingly these two players had met at the US Open last year too and at the same stage, with Berrettini completing a straight-set win over Rublev.

Berrettini Continues to Impress

At some stage, Italy’s Berrettini will be tested in this tournament. That stage wasn’t his third round match against Casper Ruud, who was absolutely blown away by the world number eight, who had made it to the semifinal stage last US Open.

That was his best showing by some distance at Grand Slam tennis, but the manner in which he has gone in this tournament so far, it seems like he could well emulate that.

Berrettini had started off the tournament with a straight-set win over Go Soeda, before getting past Ugo Humbert in the second. Humbert had a teeny weeny chance in the third set tie-breaker but came undone under pressure.

And in his latest match, the third round encounter against Ruud, Berrettini sweated out even lesser as he notched up a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 win. He played like those odds of 3/20 represented his cause going into this match and while he now takes on a difficult opposition in the form of Rublev, his form, confidence and class are all there for everyone to see.

The Italian, who could face Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinal if both win, should believe he has more than an even chance of going through.

Rublev Ends Caruso’s Honeymoon

The world number 100 Salvatore Caruso was on a two-match winning streak and playing in his first third round match at the US Open, would have backed himself to push Rublev around a tad even if he knew another victory looked nigh impossible.

Instead, Rublev used this opportunity to teach his opponent a lesson in tennis, displaying a master-class of tennis and winning in straight sets. Two of those three ended in bagels for the Italian.

And as far as Rublev’s form is concerned, it is no different from Berrettini’s. He started off by lording over Jeremy Chardy in straight sets in the first round before a punishing 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 win over Gregoire Barrere followed in the second.

With Caruso dispatched so easily in the third, he will go into the fourth round as fresh as his opponent. Rublev has beaten one Italian and it proved to be a quick job. Can he make it two in two?

Berrettini v Rublev Prediction & Tip

There isn’t much to choose between the two players but we think Berrettini’s win over Rublev in the previous US Open and his overall form give him a better chance to win this and move into the quarterfinal.

Tip: Berrettini to win: 10/11 (bet365)
