Dominic Thiem v Felix Auger- Aliassime Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the two players, both of whom are exciting athletes, and it promises to be a thrilling encounter.

Thiem In Search Of Elusive Slam

Dominic Thiem & Daniil Medvedev were billed as the greatest pre-tournament challenges to the world number one and 17-time Grand Slam winner, Novak Djokovic. With Stefanos Tistipas now out of the tournament, that view has only got more defined.

Having just turned 27 this week, Thiem has had a career full of promise, and good results, but as a result of the presence of the Big Three, he does not quite have the big tournaments under his belt the way he should.

Since the beginning of 2019, the Austrian holds an enviable 7-3 head-to-head against  Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. The 2019 Indian Wells Masters 1000 winner, remains in search of his first major title, and continues to be referred as the “Best Player Yet to Win a Major”.

After missing out, nearly, against Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open final leading two sets to one, Thiem did not have the best of Februarys before the season was suspended for the pandemic. The Austrian returned to the tour, at the Western & Southern Open, with a shock opening round loss to Filip Krajinovic.

Thiem was challenged by young Spaniard Jaume Munar, in the opener, before Munar retired with an injury, but was clinical in his second round win against Indian Sumit Nagal with a convincing straight sets win. In the third round encounter against 2014 US Open winner Marin Cilic, Thiem was off to a thundering start capturing the first two sets 6-2, 6-2, in quick time.

The veteran Croat clawed back to win the third set, and seemed to have the number two seed, Thiem, under all sorts of pressure in the fourth set before the Austrian got lucky to squeeze out a 6-3 win in the fourth set.

With Roberto Bautista Agut now out of Thiem’s quarter of the draw, the ‘Prince of Clay’ (Thiem) will fancy his chances for a deep run into week two despite some very worthy challengers in Felix Auger- Aliassime and Alex De Minaur among others.

Auger-Aliassime In Ominous Form

Twenty-year old Felix Auger-Aliassime qualified for three ATP finals in 2019, which included impressive wins against players such as Stefanos Tsitsipas, Nick Kyrgios and Grigor Dimitrov among others, and left one with high expectations for 2020. However, he had a disappointing Australian Open and an early loss at Montpelier soon thereafter, in February of this year.

His season turned around right then as he was a finalist at back-to-back tournaments, at the Rotterdam 500 and the ATP 250 at Marseille, where he lost to Gael Monfils, and Stefanos Tsitsipas respectively.

After an early loss at the Western & Southern Open last week, Auger- Aliassime was challenged in his opening round at the US Open by Thiego Montiero, winning in four sets, with three of them going to the tiebreak. The Canadian has been in clinical form in the last two rounds, against veteran Andy Murray, and French Next Gen Corentin Moutet, dropping a total of 14 games in the two matches.

In his first ever fourth round at a major, the Canadian will be looking to keep the momentum going as the quality of the opposition only gets more difficult here on.

Thiem v Auger-Aliassime Prediction & Tip

Although the two players have never played each other, it remains an exciting match for fans and the players themselves. The quality of shot making and the athleticism can be expected to be of high quality, with some spectacular points.

Neither has been overly tested, and given the level of fitness of both, that should not be a factor going in. Auger- Aliassime is in excellent form, and Thiem has had a brilliant and consistent last year or so on the tour. A classic fourth round encounter on Labor Day, where Thiem’s experience should see him prevail in four evenly matched sets.

Tip: Thiem to win in four sets: 10/3 (bet365)
