Denis Shapovalov v Pablo Carreno Busta Head to Head

There have been four previous matches between Shapovalov and Carreno Busta in their careers and the Spaniard leads 3-1. Shapovolav’s only win against Carreno Busta came in the Rome Masters last year, but at all the other three meetings, the Spaniard won in straight sets.

This includes a fourth round meeting at the 2017 US Open which ended in three tie-breakers.

Shapovalov Moves Past Favourite Goffin

David Goffin was a slight favourite heading into their fourth round match on Sunday and when he took the first set tie-breaker 7-0, things weren’t exactly looking rosy for Shapovalov.

The Canadian, however, having been stretched in all his previous three rounds, looked to take something out of those encounters and came back strongly to win the next three sets and the match easily. He won 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 to notch up his first ever quarterfinal at a Grand Slam.

This follows a strong showing last season in which Shapovalov was a Paris Masters finalist, where he lost to Novak Djokovic. He was also a part of the Canadian Davis Cup side that made it to the final.

Before this tournament, Shapovalov hadn’t had the best of seasons. Having played in seven tournaments on the tour, the Canadian had found the going very tough and the lack of consistency meant he failed to win two matches in a row in any of those competitions. There were first round exits at the Australian Open, Montpellier Open and Rotterdam Open as well.

Which is why, while Shapovalov’s draw has been slightly easier than most – having only faced a 19th and a seventh seed so far and a 20th seed now – he would be thrilled at his deep run here.

Carreno Busta Benefits from Djokovic Brainfade

It was described as a rookie mistake by John McEnroe while Novak Djokovic’s fans would believe it was a punishment that didn’t fit the crime but it didn’t matter in the end – Pablo Carreno Busta benefitted from the decision to default Djokovic after he accidentally hit an official with a ball.

To be fair to Carreno Busta, he had come back from three break-points down to break Djokovic and was about to serve for the first set when the incident occurred.

The 29-year-old has made one US Open semifinal before this, which was also his best showing at a Grand Slam but since that performance in 2017, it’s been bit of a struggle for him. A couple of fourth round exits at the Australian Open were his best results, which having gone through 2019 with just a third round at the Cincinnati Masters to show.

At the Australian Open earlier this year, he showed some early form but met Rafael Nadal in the third round, while losing to Felix Auger-Aliassime in the semifinal at the Rotterdam Open – those two aside, it’s not been the best season for the Spaniard either.

Until now that is. Can he take confidence from the short time he was on court with Djokovic where he nearly grabbed the first set. Plus he has had a nice break too.

Shapovalov v Carreno Busta Prediction & Tip

Shapovalov starts off a favourite at 4/7 to his opponent’s 11/8 but this could be a tougher match than this. With Carreno Busta holding a better head to head record too, this match looks like it could go to four sets at the very least.

Tip: Four sets in the match: 11/8 (bet365)
