Guido Pella v Yoshihito Nishioka Head to Head

This will be the second encounter between Pella and Nishioka, with their first having come at a Challenger in 2015. Pella had won that match on clay in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.

Pella Hoping for a Better Clay Season

For starters the former world number 20 Pella did not feature in the Cincinnati Open. And when he kick-started his season with the US Open, it was over before it began.

In the very first round, Pella went down to JJ Wolf in four sets, following on from a pre-pandemic season which had seen him feature in three clay court tournaments. He won just one match in those, losing in the first round at Cordoba and Rio.

It could all be a matter of getting back into rhythm for Pella. With three back to back tournaments to now be played on clay, he could tell himself to start from scratch and resume his climb back up the rankings having fallen to 36th now.

Pella faces an opponent who has typically struggled on clay in the past.

Nishioka’s First Clay Tournament This Year

While Pella has already played in three tournaments on clay this season, Nishioka will be in his first. And while Pella’s record earlier this season saw him play four matches and lose three of them on the red dirt, the fact his Japanese opponent hasn’t even played one match on the surface in indicative of his preferences.

This is exemplified by his record over the past four seasons on clay.

Nishioka has played 26 matches on it and won just 12 of those, ending each of those seasons with a negative record.

Now he starts off his journey with an opening round match against a player who is bit of a clay court specialist, having won his only ATP title at the Sao Paulo Open on clay and reached the quarterfinal of the Monte-Carlo Masters – both these results having come in 2019.

Pella v Nishioka Prediction & Tip

Pella might have had his own form issues but this one shouldn’t give him too many issues. The Argentine to win in straight sets.

Tip: Pella to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
