Heather Watson v Sara Sorribes Tormo Head to Head

There have been three matches played between these two players with Watson leading the head to head 2-1. Their first meeting came at the 2017 Seoul Open first round and Sorribes Tormo won in three sets but since then Watson has won at both, the Vancouver ITF competition and New Haven Open played last year.

Watson Yet to Win a Match Post Pandemic

It is bit of a surprise but Heather Watson hasn’t won anything across the three tournaments she played since tennis resumed following the pandemic. Why a surprise? Because of her form in the Battle of the Brits tournament she played during the break.

Featuring in the team event in that competition, Watson won all her five matches, and while one can put that down to lack of strong opposition, it also would have helped her shrug off the rustiness.

It didn’t quite help. First Jennifer Brady put her through a grinder in the Lexington Open, then she went down in straight sets to Bernarda Pera at the Cincinnati Open before losing to countrywoman Jo Konta at the US Open.

And now Watson plays in her first tournament on clay, traditionally a surface she hasn’t won too much on. Tough times ahead.

Sorribes Tormo Will Look Forward to the Clay

Like Watson, Sorribes Tormo had a good time playing exhibition tournaments during the pandemic break, winning two of them back home in Spain. She resumed the season with a first round loss at the Palermo Open too but has had a couple of decent showings since then.

At the Prague Open, Sorribes Tormo made it through to the quarterfinal while a sudden shift to the hard courts of US Open didn’t cause her too many issues – she won her opener and fought hard against Elise Mertens in the second before going down.

And now Sorribes Tormo is back on the kind of surface she likes, in the hope she can build up nicely to the Italian Open and the French Open. She has made the second round at Roland-Garros just once and never qualified for the Italian Open, so a good solid showing here will be necessary.

Watson v Sorribes Tormo Prediction & Tip

As expected the odds favour Sorribes Tormo and by some distance – she is 1/3 to win this. We could well be looking at a straight-set win for the Spaniard, such is the discrepancy between them on this surface.

Tip: Sorribes Tormo to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
