Zarina Diyas v Aliaksandra Sasnovich Head to Head

This will only be the second time these two players are facing off in a competitive match with their first outing having come at the 2015 Wimbledon. Diyas had won that second round fixture in straight sets.

Diyas on a Five Match Losing Streak

It’s been more than seven months since Diyas won a competitive match, with her second round win at the Australian Open earlier this year being that last victory.

After having started off the season with a title win at the Hong Kong ITF competition and then making it to the quarterfinal at the Shenzhen Open and the third round in Melbourne, Diyas’ season looked to have gotten off to the kind of start she would have liked.

Except it seems to have crash-landed after that.

That third round defeat at the Australian Open was followed by back to back losses in the Fed Cup and with Diyas not playing a single exhibition match during the pandemic break, the rustiness was there for everyone to see in the two tournaments she has played since.

At the Cincinnati Open, Diyas went down to Ann Li while losing to Bernarda Pera at the US Open – both in straight sets.

And now having not played a single match on clay all season, she begins her campaign with a lot of her confidence shot. Can Sasnovich take advantage of that despite being ranked 37 places behind her?

Sasnovich Coming off a Career-Best in the US Open

Sasnovich had made it to the third round of the US Open once in her career, and repeated that last week as well, stunning Marketa Vondrousova on the way. While she failed to hold on to a set lead against Yulia Putintseva in round three, her comeback from the pandemic break has been a lot more fruitful than her opponent’s.

Earlier in the season, she had made it through the qualifiers in the first tournament following the tennis resumption to then shock Elise Mertens, and beat Jasmine Paolini before losing in the quarterfinals. And while she didn’t make the main draw at Prague, she has had a lot of recent experience playing on clay courts.

As a result she would go into this opener knowing she has the game and the edge to get past her opponent. It’s just about getting back into the clay court rhythm.

Diyas v Sasnovich Prediction & Tip

Sasnovich is 4/11 to win this which is slightly shorter odds than what we would have hoped for but that doesn’t take our mind off the fact we are backing her to win this easily.

Tip: Sasnovich to win: 4/11 (bet365)
