Naomi Osaka v Jennifer Brady Head to Head
All levels included there have been two matches between Osaka and Brady, with both having won one apiece. The first of those came in an ITF tournament way back in 2014 where Brady managed a straight-set victory over Osaka before the Japanese former world number one had her revenge with a 6-4, 6-4 drubbing of her opponent at Charleston.

Having gone into her quarterfinal against American Shelby Rogers with 0-3 win-loss record, Osaka was able to turn things around with a straightforward 6-3, 6-4 victory. The match lasted a mere 79 minutes and firmly established Osaka’s chances of winning her second US Open and third Grand Slam.
The difference between the two players was how Osaka managed to remain accurate despite smashing 24 winners; there were only eight unforced errors to go with that. Interestingly, Osaka admitted she was strategically aggressive even if it meant she lost points to unforced errors – and while she managed the former, there was hardly any pushback because of errors.
Rogers, who had fallen to 93rd in the world because of fitness concerns over the past two seasons, did not serve too well and finally lost her serve at 3-2 in the first set. Rogers broke back but was broken in the very next game again before Osaka sealed off the set 6-3.
The second set was a lot more straightforward. Osaka’s powerful forehand helped her go 2-1 up with a break and she then let her serve take over to wrap up the set 6-4 – never in trouble on serve over the set.
On paper in terms of form, Osaka’s only real opponent of note has been Anett Kontaveit and the 2018 winner had absolutely destroyed her in round four. She now faces her second big test of the competition.

Brady Puts Putintseva to Place
Since returning back from the pandemic, Jennifer Brady has played a total of 11 matches, spread across three different tournaments. She has won 10 and lost one but what’s most impressive is barring that shock defeat to Jessica Pegula at the Cincinnati Open, Brady is yet to drop a set.
In this US Open itself, Brady hasn’t been tested, losing four games in a set just once so far. And against Yulia Putintseva, despite Brady admitting she was very nervous, she didn’t show that one bit. The American came through 6-3, 6-2, with her serve and forehand combination proving to be too potent for her opponents.
Having already beaten players like Angelique Kerber and Caroline Garcia in the competition, Putintseva was never going to be a major threat but what was interesting to watch was how Brady pushed the nerves around her first quarterfinal at Grand Slam to place.
A 4-0 lead in the first set quickly dispelled any nervousness and while Putintseva got one break back, there was no looking back from there on for Brady. A tougher challenge, and that’s bit of an understatement, awaits Brady in the semifinal but she has the weapons to trouble the best by the looks of things.
