Lajovic Looking for Elusive Win

It’s not been a great time for Lajovic after having begun the season so well. The Serb had won four of his six singles matches for Serbia in the ATP Cup, to help his country lift the trophy and followed it up with a third round appearance at the Australian Open before he lost to Diego Schwartzman.

When the action moved to clay, which is Lajovic’s more preferred surface, a lot more was expected out of him but he ended the pre-pandemic season with a 2-2 win-loss record on that surface. A second round at exit at the Acapulco Open ended his season for a bit before he returned to play in a couple of exhibition tournaments during the pandemic.

And since then he has won nothing. Five defeats during the pandemic and first round exits at the Cincinnati Open and US Open – where he lost to Egor Gerasimov – has left him with a lot to do.

Can he turn things around in the lead-up to the French Open where he has his best ever showing at a Grand Slam?

Hanfmann’s Played a Few During the Break

There are a few players like Fabio Fognini who haven’t played a single match for six months. And then there’s Hanfmann, who has been on the court for 40 matches during the break. Yep, 40!

Which is why when Hanfmann returned from the break, it wouldn’t have come as much of a surprise when he went on to win the Todi Challenger which included a win over Marco Cecchinato.

While his performances at the two tournaments which followed, at Trieste and Cordenons weren’t quite up to the scratch, he has won a couple of qualifiers to get to the main draw here before his opening round victory. He defeated Alexander Bublik in straight sets to set up this meeting with Lajovic.

A couple of good solid wins could take him closer to the top 100 and earn him an automatic qualification for the French Open, having played just two Grand Slam main draw matches in his career before this.

Lajovic v Hanfmann Prediction & Tip

Lajovic will be worked over in this one given his lack of form and his opponent’s consistency at his own level in recent times. The Serb should still win but a three-setter looks likely.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
