Hubert Hurkacz v Maximilian Marterer Head to Head

Hurkacz has never played the 337th-ranked Marterer before this in his career.

Hurkacz Starts off with Easy Win

It has been a struggle all season for the Pole, having entered the tournament with a 2-6 win-loss record this season. That, however, was offset by the fact he was up against a player who hadn’t won a single match this year, having lost seven in row had Joao Sousa.

And as we had thought, Hurkacz didn’t just relegate him to his eighth defeat but also did that in straight sets.

That win should give him the push he needed, but more vitally he now takes on a player ranked outside the top 300. Looking ahead at the draw too, his first real test would probably come up against Diego Schwartzman in the semifinal.

What Hurkacz would want is to register back to back convincing wins to get himself in a frame of mind needed against the Argentine.

That said, he would do well to not discount his second round opponent who was once ranked 45th in the world.

Marterer’s Dip Down a Worry

Marterer is a former world number 45 but has fallen to 337th in the world right now. This year, before the pandemic hit the world in general and tennis in particular, his only performance of note was at the Koblenz Challenger where he made it to the third round, but other than that his struggles were there for everyone to see.

Which is what followed after the pandemic as well.

There was a quarterfinal at the Trieste Challenger sure, but that was followed by another second round at the Cordenons Challenger before he opted to play in only his second tournament at the highest level – he had been knocked out of the Australian Open qualifiers earlier.

Marterer won a couple of matches during the qualifiers to make a surprise main draw entry but to then beat the local lad Dennis Novak in straight sets in the first round will probably be one of his best wins of recent times.

Hurkacz v Marterer Prediction & Tip

Hurkacz is 4/6 to win this, which is surprisingly long for the kind of gulf on offer and we would be happy to go with his victory here.

Tip: Hurkacz to win: 4/6 (bet365)
