Daniil Medvedev v Dominic Thiem Head to Head
Thiem leads the head-to-head 2-1 and this will be their fourth meeting on the tour. They met twice in 2019, with Thiem winning convincingly on the Barcelona clay, and Medvedev following it with a convincing win in Montreal, on the hard courts.
The Austrian won a tight first ever encounter in St.Petersburg the year before.

The 2019 hard court season was a memorable one for Russian Next Gen Daniil Medvedev, with the highlights being appearing in six finals, being a US Open finalist and winning Masters 1000 titles at Cincinnati and Shanghai. Notably, Medvedev came back from being down two sets to love against Rafael Nadal in the final, and nearly clinched a close decider.
Although his showing at the year-end ATP Finals in London was off color, Medvedev came into the 2020 season with immense promise. After a strong showing at the ATP Cup, the first two months of the season were marred by unexpected losses, both during the Australian Open and the indoor tournaments during February.
Medvedev was off to a confident start at the Western & Southern Open ATP Masters 1000 this week, and looked in control of his quarter-final match against Roberto Bautista-Agut, until a drop in concentration resulted in a close loss for Medvedev.
In his first few rounds, the number four seed looked mercilessly relentless. Medvedev is yet to drop a single set and has made upcoming players like Frances Tiafoe look very pedestrian. With Novak Djokovic out of the draw, Medvedev is definitely looking the bookmaker’s favorite, and despite Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev around, it will take some doing to scalp the Russian world number five in this mood.
Medvedev was challenged by compatriot Andrey Rublev in the quarter-final and despite some cramps and shoulder niggles at the end of the match, the higher ranked Russian emerged in straight sets, winning two crucial tiebreaks.
All aspects of Medvedev’s game have been clicking and he is bringing back memories of his 2019 hard court form. His semi-final match-up against Dominic Thiem is being billed as the match of the tournament in the waiting.

Thiem Looking To Finally Break Through
Number two seed Dominic Thiem has had a career full of promise, and good results, but as a result of the presence of the Big Three, he does not quite have the big tournaments under his belt the way he should by now.
The Austrian holds an enviable 7-3 head-to-head against Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic over the last 18 months and now inches closer to another shot at a Grand Slam title, here in New York.
Having lost two French Open finals to the ‘King of Clay’ Rafael Nadal, Thiem missed out nearly earlier this year at the Australian Open final to Novak Djokovic after leading two sets to one. The Austrian returned to the tour after the pandemic hiatus, at the Western & Southern Open, with a shock opening round loss to Filip Krajinovic.
The number two seed started a little rusty here at the US Open, but got stronger with every round. His clinical display over the first two sets against 2014 US Open winner Marin Cilic and the last two sets against Felix Auger-Aliassime in the third and fourth round respectively brought back a world of confidence.
In his second US Open quarter-final, after being in the final eight in 2018, where he lost an epic five-setter to Rafael Nadal in a match that ended at 2:04 am, Thiem was drawn against Next Gen Aussie Alex de Minaur. Although the scoreline suggests a convincing win for the Austrian, he had interspersed moments of brilliance and scratchy play. He will need to get off the mark better hereon to go the distance at this tournament.
The Austrian is in his first ever US Open semi-final with a field that looks different without the Big Three, but challenging nevertheless and will be hoping that he can take the next two steps needed to get that elusive first major title.
Medvedev v Thiem Prediction & Tip
Since the beginning of the tournament, this match was billed as the one to decide who would play Novak Djokovic in the final. Now, with the Serb out of the draw, many look at this as a potential final. While one cannot discount the presence and the chances of Alexander Zverev, it will be fair to say that the winner of this encounter will be a slight favorite in the final.
Expect a grueling battle between Medvedev’s strokeplay and Thiem’s perseverance and grit. It will be important for the Russian to start well, as Thiem is bound to hang in till the very end. What remains to be seen as well is how Medvedev recovers from his minor injury niggles that surfaced late in the Rublev encounter.
Not much to choose from, anybody’s match to be honest, but a long match on the cards and the infinite energy levels of Thiem to prevail in a decider.
