Bouchard in First Final Since 2016

It’s been a little over four and a half years since Bouchard last entered the final of a WTA event. Her career, which had seen a few ups to begin with, none of which bigger than a Wimbledon final, had been spiralling downwards for a while since that last finals appearance in Malaysia.

However, with Bouchard having announced she would be looking climb her way back in the rankings chart, fans can probably look forward to some more exciting tennis from the Canadian. The kind of tennis that helps a player who’s got a wildcard for the qualifiers to make it to the final of an event.

We had said in our semifinal preview, if Bouchard remains fit – and there were a few issues with the shoulder in the quarterfinal – she has a very good chance of making it to the final and that was not to do with her opponent. More, a case of the kind of performance she had put in all week.

Sure there have been times when Bouchard has been stretched, most notably by Svetlana Kuznetova, the top seed, who has a happy knack of fighting back from adversity, but at no point has it looked like the former world number five has thrown in the towel.

A three-setter against Kuznetova and Danka Kovinic was followed by a 6-3, 6-2 drubbing of Paula Badosa, a win which should keep her in good spirits coming into this final.

Maria Tig Looking to Up the Ante

Back in 2019, Maria Tig won her biggest WTA title to date, a victory at the $125k event in Karlsruhe that was played on clay too. She now enters the final of the Istanbul Cup with a chance to double that count, but more importantly win a WTA International event.

And it’s been a tournament to remember for the Romanian who has never seen the better side of top 80 in the WTA rankings.

Having resumed the season following the pandemic break at Palermo on clay, Maria Tig lost in the first round there before going down in the opener at the Prague Open as well. A hat-trick of defeats followed at the Cincinnati Open and while she finally won her first match of the post-pandemic season at the US Open, a crushing second round defeat followed.

Which is why wins over Olga Danilovic and Misaki Doi in her opening two rounds would have given her the confidence but her biggest morale-injection would have been the upset of the second seeded Swede Rebecca Peterson in the quarterfinal.

She had bit of a scare in what seemed like a routine semifinal win over Tereza Martincova but Maria Tig came through in straight sets to set up this meeting with Bouchard.

Bouchard v Maria Tig Prediction & Tip

Bouchard has already played six matches in the tournament, two more than her opponent and exhaustion could be a factor here. She is a favourite but don’t write off Maria Tig, who could take her to  third set.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
