Dan Evans v Hubert Hurkacz Head to Head

Clay Not the Most Preferred for Dan Evans

Dan Evans produced an eye-catching 2019 season in which he played some of the best tennis of his life. He recorded 55 match wins across both the ATP and Challenger tours, and won two Challenger titles (in Nottingham and Surbiton, both on grass).

Evans carried that impressive form all the way to the Australian summer in January. He was instrumental in steering Great Britain to the ATP Cup quarterfinals, notching some fine victories over the likes of David Goffin and Alex De Minaur in singles.

The crafty man from Birmingham would then make a quarterfinal in Adelaide, losing narrowly to the eventual champion Andrey Rublev. However, he earned a shot at redemption when he beat the Russian at the same stage in Dubai to make his first semifinal of the season.

The Briton rose to a new career-high ranking of world no.28 following his tremendous start to the year and capped off the pandemic-enforced pause with a title at the Battle of the Brits. His form though has waned since the tour restarted, losing in the second round of both the Cincinnati Masters and US Open respectively.

Evans has a jaw-dropping stat on clay. He has only ever played 14 matches on the surface in the last five years (including qualifiers), and has won a modest five matches.

Hurkacz is Poland’s Finest, But Needs to Show it

Exactly one year ago, Hubert Hurkacz made Polish history at the Winston-Salem Open when he beat France’s Benoit Paire to win his first ATP tour title, simultaneously becoming the first male player from Poland to win a tour-level title in 37 years.

The 23-year-old was ranked outside the top-200 at the start of 2018, but achieved a top-40 year-end ranking at the end of last year. Hurkacz left his mark at the ATP Cup in January this year despite Poland’s failed bid to get out of the group stage. He won all three of his singles rubbers, beating Diego Schwartzman, Borna Coric and Australian Open finalist Dominic Thiem.

The Wroclaw native made his first semifinal of the season a week after in Auckland and he hasn’t quite been the same player. He has failed to win back-to-back matches ever since, and he was beaten comfortably by Germany’s Maximilian Marterer in Kitzbuhel.

Hurkacz, currently ranked no.33 in the world (five spots down from his career-high) is Poland’s no.1.

Evans v Hurkacz Prediction & Tip

Neither player is playing particularly well, but if we reserve our judgement purely on the surface which is of course a big factor, Hurkacz would be the clear favorite. The Pole brings some much needed sharpness after playing on clay during lockdown, and he scored a fine win over Joao Sousa at the Generali Open this week. Expect him to squeeze past the one-handed Briton.

.Tip: Hurkacz to win in straight sets: (bet365)
