Jabeur on the Cusp of Top-30

Ons Jabeur is undoubtedly the face of Arab tennis both in her native Tunisia and throughout the North African region. As she continues to garner worldwide attention and legion of fans, her progress in terms of ranking and results has been on an upward trajectory.

The Tunisian trailblazer began this year by becoming the first Arab woman to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam at the Australian Open, losing out to eventual champion Sofia Kenin. She excelled at the Middle East hard court swing in February, making the Round of 16 in Dubai when she was a point away from knocking out Simona Halep. In Doha a week after, she made the last eight at that event for the first time, falling to Petra Kvitova narrowly.

Jabeur’s defeats this season show just how tough it is to outlast her in matches. It has taken Grand Slam champions to beat her and is clear assessment her game is peaking. Currently she sits at no.34 in the world, but a decent week in Rome could see her break the top-30 for the first time in her career.

Gauff Makes Her Main Draw Debut

It is near impossible to find a tennis talent on the circuit who is on a steeper climb than Cori Gauff. The highly talented teenager was ranked at no.686 in the world at the start of 2019 and virtually unknown to pretty much everybody in the tennis world bar her parents.

Cori, much known as Coco, proceeded to crack the top-50 in an eventful year. She won her first WTA singles title, and made impressive runs at two Grand Slam tournaments, all before turning 16 years old.

The American has since continued her meteoric rise this season where she reached the fourth round of the Australian Open, beating Venus Williams for the second time in her career and the defending champion Naomi Osaka en route. Her momentum did come at a screeching halt at the US Open where she was tipped to go on a deep run, but fell at the first hurdle to Anastasija Sevastova.

Gauff will maker her main draw debut at a Premier Mandatory tournament on clay, and the forthcoming French Open will see her earn a place in the main draw for the first time as well.

Jabeur v Gauff Prediction & Tip

Jabeur is the more accomplished player here, but Gauff’s stock is rising fast. The American might only be 16, but she plays like a player twice that age. Still, we expect the Tunisian to have the answers on the slow clay courts at Foro Italico.

Tip: Jabeur to win in straight sets: 6/5 (bet365)
