Vera Zvonareva v Daria Kasatkina Head to Head

This will be the second encounter between Zvonareva and Kasatkina. In the first that was played in 2019 at the St. Petersburg Open, Zvonareva had won in straight sets to enter the semifinal where she lost to Donna Vekic.

Zvonareva Gets a Wildcard

Zvonareva is a two-time semifinalist at the Italian Open but hasn’t appeared in the main draw of this tournament since 2010. In 2019, she tried to go through the qualifiers but fell in the first round of qualifying.

And clay hasn’t been her most favourite surface either. Last year, for instance, she featured in four clay court competitions and failed to advance beyond the first round in either of them. The good news was Zvonareva made the main draw at two of them through the qualifiers.

Even before that, in 2018 her record on clay was 1-3.

That said, it’s been a much better season for Zvonareva in 2020 and while the following results came on hard court surfaces, the confidence making it to the semifinal at the Indian Wells $125k competition and the third round at the Cincinnati Open, also as a qualifier, would have been immense.

Can she now tweak her game, as a 36-year-old to get the better of her compatriot?

Kasatkina’s Slide Continues

Adelaide International, Australian Open, St. Petersburg Open, Qatar Open, Palermo Open, Cincinnati Open and US Open – what do all these tournaments have in common? Well, Kasatkina played in all of them and lost in the first round.

Once ranked 10th in the world, the 23-year-old Kasatkina is now 70th and her lack of results have continued to remain a mystery even this year. Other than a striking performance in Lyon in March just prior to the lockdown, Kasatkina has fumbled her way out of this year’s tournaments very early.

She has had a couple of easy qualifying wins in this tournament at the Italian Open, dropped just five games across four sets against Arina Rodionova and Gabriela Dabrowski, which is a marked improvement on how she has gone about qualifiers over the last few months too.

She now faces a 178th-ranked player, which should make her job easier than at most other first rounds but it’s a fellow Russian who has been a veteran of a few years of tennis. We could be in for a fighting match of tennis.

Zvonareva v Kasatkina Prediction & Tip

While Kasatkina starts a favourite we are expecting Zvonareva to dish out a solid, fighting showing and push her opponent hard. Kasatkina to win in a battle though.

Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
