Iga Swiatek v Arantxa Rus Head to Head

There hasn’t been a single match between Swiatek and Rus at any competitive level before this.

Swiatek with an Exhibition Tournament Win This Year

The Polish world number 52 has played in just four main tournaments in 2020 but that aside, has been a part of a few others, like exhibition competitions and the Fed Cup. And her overall record this year stands at an impressive 18-5 which includes a whopping 9-1 on clay.

Now admittedly, all of those matches on clay came at the exhibition tennis level, as Swiatek took part in the Elle Spirit Open back home and the Tipsport Elite Trophy in Czech Republic. She clinched the former, by winning three group stage matches and then defeating two of her rivals at the semifinal and final stage.

Last season, Swiatek participated at three clay court competitions as an 18-year-old and displayed remarkable maturity for someone that young. There was a final appearance at the Lugano Open, before she won three matches to qualify for the main draw in Prague.

Her best showing, however, came at the French Open where she reached the fourth round before Simona Halep ended her fairy-tale campaign. Swiatek now plays her first main draw match at the Italian Open or any clay court Premier competition.

Rus Won Eight ITF Clay Court Titles Last Year

Rus was ranked 137th in the world last year but a series of titles at the lower circuit of the ITF level allowed her to break into the top 100 for the first time since 2013. The 29-year-old has now moved to 71st in the world, 10 away from her career-best she achieved eight seasons ago.

This has been thanks to her showing at the Monterrey Open in March where Rus made the semifinal before losing to Elina Svitolina. She hadn’t dropped a set en route the last four stage there.

Since the pandemic break ended and tennis returned, Rus was bundled out in the opening round at the Palermo Open while winning her first round match in Prague. Her best showing came at the Cincinnati Open where she won two qualifiers to make the main draw and then defeated Alison van Uytvanck in the first round.

It would be the second round loss to Serena Williams which might be etched in her memory because even though Rus didn’t win, she took it to the third set and Williams needed two tie-breakers to get the better of her.

Swiatek v Rus Prediction & Tip

Swiatek loves playing on clay and starts out at 8/15 to win this. She is our favourite too in this match but will need to be wary of the fighting prowess of Rus who has shown glimpses of her best form this year.

Tip: Swiatek to win: 8/15 (bet365)
