Struff has a solid record on clay, having won eight of his 11 lower level title on the surface. He has also made it to the fourth round of a Grand Slam on just one occasion and that came at the French Open the previous year.
Which is why the German, who had managed a reasonable third round appearance at Rome last season, will be buzzing with confidence, coming into this competition. This isn’t even accounting for the two solid showings following the pandemic break at the Cincinnati Open and US Open.
In his first tournament since the sport resumed, Struff made it to the quarterfinals at the Western & Southern Open with wins over Alex De Minaur, Denis Shapovalov and David Goffin. At the US Open, he reached round three and at both these competitions it took a Novak Djokovic special to end his stint at these tournaments.
Now, with the clay court swing in front of him, he would look to better that and better his career-best ranking of 29th (he is 30th right now) with some performances to remember.

Qualifier Coria Aiming to Break Top 100
28-year-old Coria has never seen his name in the top 100 of the ATP rankings and now ranked 104th would be a very good opportunity to do so. He is playing on a surface he likes and while Struff is a top opponent, it could have been a lot worse had he been playing a top-ranked player as an opener.
Coria also has the confidence of winning three qualifying matches to make it to the main draw of the Rome Masters. After Paolo Lorenzi won the first set of their first qualifying round here, Coria went on a six-set-winning spree, defeating him, Steven Diez and Damir Dzumhur in straight sets.
Interestingly, Coria had made it to the second round at the US Open as well, but once he got knocked out, he quickly shuttled across to France to play at the Aix en Provence Challenger where he was bundled out in the round one.
He will hope he can put up a better display than that here.
Struff v Coria Prediction & Tip
Coria is a clay specialist but Struff knows his way around the surface and is quite clearly a better pedigreed player. The German should win this and while he could be stretched a little, we might still be looking at a straight-set win.
