Monfils Hoping To Return To February Form

After a strong 2019 that saw him return to the top 10 in the ATP rankings, 2020 was off to an excellent start for Gael Monfils.  After making the round of 16 at the Australian Open, where he was defeated by runner-up Dominic Thiem, it was a fantastic February for the Frenchman Gael Monfils.

The Frenchman won back-to-back titles at Montpellier and Rotterdam and looked in sublime touch through the month of February. At the ATP 500 in Dubai, he continued his strong run of form and was up a set and had match points in the second against Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals, on the verge of an unprecedented, but well deserved win.

However, the relentless Novak Djokovic never gives up, and nerves got the better of Monfils, and the world number one from Serbia went on to win in three sets.

Monfils has historically been comfortable on clay, and will look to rekindle the form that took him to the French Open semi-finals in 2008.

Koepfer Confident After de Minaur Win

Dominik Koepfer has already played four matches at the Italian Open this time around. His path towards a first main draw appearance at the Masters 1000 involves winning three qualifiers, each in three sets, against Flavio Cobolli, Gilles Simon and Mikhail Kukushkin respectively.

Koepfer who hails from Furtwangen but lives in Tampa, Florida in the US, enjoyed a career-best season in 2019. He won his first title at the ATP Challenger on grass, and won his first major match at Wimbledon soon thereafter.

He followed this with a good run at the 2019 US Open where he reached the fourth round as a qualifier, defeating Reilly Opelka and Nikoloz Basilashvili along the way before losing to eventual runner-up Daniil Medvedev in four sets.

Having also broken into the top 100 of the ATP rankings, the German put up a strong display in the opener here to defeat US Open quarter-finalist from last week, Aussie Alex de Minaur.

Monfils v Koepfer Prediction and Tip

An exciting match-up on the cards, with Koepfer in good form, and Monfils always entertaining to watch. Although on paper, Monfils starts as a strong favorite, this match could be quite close, given that Monfils maybe a little rusty after the long pandemic hiatus, and the German Koepfer is on a good run, with more match practice.

Expect a good battle, with Monfils winning in three sets.

Tip: Monfils to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
