Back to the Grind for Vondrousova

Vondrousova’s tennis showings in recent times have been a pale shadow of those from the previous season when she made it to the final of the French Open. While her surgery might have had a part to play in that, what should now like is to slowly get back to her best, grind out a few wins which help her regain her rhythm.

And the first round victory over Japan’s Misaki Doi was all about that. She raced off in the first set but lost the second. And in a fighting third set battle, Vondrousova took it 6-4. It wasn’t the prettiest looking victory but it was Vondrousova’s first on clay this season and prepares her for the sterner tests ahead.

Last season, it wasn’t just at the French Open that Vondrousova had suddenly exploded with her performances; a final at the Istanbul Open and a quarterfinal here in Rome had helped her confidence immensely. Another couple of victories here at the Italian Open and she should be back to feeling good about her tennis.

Qualifier Rus Takes that Leap Forward from ITF

Last season, Rus was all about playing at the ITF circuit, and while she featured in her fair share of WTA tournaments, the victories in those were few and far between. Clay turned out to be her saviour, a surface on which she won 56 and lost just 12 matches, helping her climb from her season low of 137th to finishing on a season high of 93rd.

This year, Rus has played in just two ITF tournaments and generally focussed her attention on the WTA tour. And a semifinal at the Monterrey Open has allowed her to do that, helping her retain her top-80 ranking in the process.

Her return to tennis following the pandemic break wasn’t the greatest, as she lost in the opening round at Palermo and then fell in the second round in Prague. At the Cincinnati Open she needed to go through the qualifiers but did well to reach the second round where she took a set off Serena Williams.

Now again in Rome, she had had to go through the qualifying process, where she dropped just five games before stunning youngster Iga Swiatek in the first round. She could trouble Vondrousova as well.

Vondrousova v Rus Prediction and Tip

Rus might not be the favourite but the fact she is a mere 1/1 to win this makes us believe it’s Vondrousova’s form everyone’s worried about. Looking at a tough Vondrousova win here.
