Anett Kontaveit v Svetlana Kuznetsova Head to Head

This will be the second time that the two players will meet each other in a competitive match. Their only previous meeting was at this very tournament back in 2018. On that occasion, Kontaveit won in straight sets in the second round.

Estonian Kontaveit in Excellent Form This Year

The 24-year-old has had an excellent season so far with a win-loss record of 25-8. She started the year with a quarter-final run at the Australian Open and followed it up with excellent performances in the Fed Cup and the Dubai WTA. She won all her four matches in Fed Cup and reached the last eight in Dubai.

And even the season suspension did not affect her form and rhythm. Since the season resumed she has been in excellent form only losing three times in 16 matches. She reached the final at Palermo before making it to the last eight at Cincinnati. She was looking in great form at the US Open as well until she came up against the eventual champions Naomi Osaka in the round of 16.

Currently, she is ranked 21st in the world and has an excellent record on the clay courts. She reached the semi-finals at this event back in 2018 and in the current form would be looking to repeat the same.

Veteran Russian’s First Win Since Season Resumed

For the 35-year-old Russian, the first-round win here in Rome was just her second match since the season resumed. She was one of many players who opted against travelling to the USA. This resulted in her missing the US Open and the Cincinnati Masters. She decided to not play any exhibition events either and focused on preparing herself for the clay-court season.

But she lost her first match back at the Istanbul WTA and thus her first-round win against Bernarda Pera would have been crucial for her confidence.

The 2009 French Open champion has admitted that she wants to prioritise tournaments in order to make the most of her last few years in the game. She has had a lot of injuries in the last few seasons and slipped to as low as 198 last year.

But with a strong second half of 2019 and a semi-final run at Doha earlier this year, she is back to 38 in the rankings. This year is her 16th appearance at the tournament where she has been a finalist twice.

Anett Kontaveit v Svetlana Kuznetsova Prediction & Tip

Kuznetsova skipped the hardcourt events in order to be ready for the clay-court season. And she can be a difficult opponent on her day for anyone in the game. But given the athleticism and current form, Kontaveit will start the match as a strong favourite. Unless something dramatic happens, the 24-year-old from Estonia should progress to the next round.

Tip: Kontaveit to win in straight sets: 8/11 (bet365)
