It has been an up and down career for Dimitrov- who won the ATP Tour Finals in 2017 and was ranked as high as number three in the world, and fell to as low as number 80 in the rankings in the Summer of 2019. Currently, back up at world number 20, he will be hoping for a good run on the clay.
Grigor Dimitrov had a memorable 2019 US Open. Not only was he a semi-finalist, but he also registered a memorable quarter-final victory against Roger Federer, after being down two sets to one. This was his first ever win against Federer, in eight meetings.
2020 was a difficult summer for the Bulgarian, especially so once he contracted Covid-19 during the Adria Tour, and has shared how challenging the recovery has been.
Dimitrov returned to the tour at the Western & Southern Open, but after a win against Ugo Humbert, he lost a close encounter to Marton Fucsovics in the second round. The 14th seed did well to avenge his 2020 Australian Open loss to Tommy Paul with a clinical win at the US Open, but then blew a two sets to one lead, to lose to Marton Fuscovics again in the second round, of the US Open.
Coming to the Italian Open in search of some match practice and confidence on clay, Dimitrov was initially stretched in his opener against Gianclua Mager, but eventually won comfortably in straight sets. Against Yoshihito Nishioka in the second round, the Bulgarian put up a stellar display prevailing 6-1, 6-0.
Hoping to have a deep run here in Rome, Dimitrov is up next against Italian teenager Jannik Sinner who has been in stellar form this week.

Sinner Beats Tsitsipas For Biggest Win Of Career
Jannik Sinner was a relatively unknown 18-year-old Italian teenager playing on the ATP Challenger and ITF Futures tour this time last year. A wild card entry to the European Open late in the 2019 season saw him make the semi-finals defeating Gael Monfils en route and then he furthered it winning the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan, defeating Alex de Minaur in the title round.
Breaking into the top 100 of the world rankings, Sinner won his first match against a top ten player in David Goffin, and made the quarter-finals of the ATP 500 at Rotterdam. Upon returning to the tour after the pandemic break, Sinner looked in a commanding position against number 12 seed Karen Khachanov at the US Open, being up two sets to love, only to lose the next three sets.
Last week at the Kitzbuhel ATP 250, Sinner was defeated in the quarterfinal upon his return to clay. He has however looked in good nick this week defeating Benoit Paire convincingly in the opener, and then facing number three seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, who Sinner defeated in three sets.
The victory against Tsitsipas will recall as among the best thus far in his short career, where he had opportunities to close in straight sets, but held his nerve well to prevail in a convincing final set.

This should make for an interesting contest as both players are exciting to watch and have shot making ability. While Dimitrov continues to attempt to revive his career back to the form of 2017, and better, Sinner is still aiming to kick start his. Both players have looked good thus far this week and will come into the match high on confidence.
A difficult match to pick, but the Sinner run may just continue, with a victory in the decider.
