Monfils Hopes to Shrug off Early Rome Loss

It was Monfils’ first match after a break of more than six months when he took on the German qualifier Dominik Koepfer in his second round at the Rome Masters. And the expected rustiness proved to be too much for Monfils to shrug off as he crashed to a straight-set defeat at the hands of a player who has never seen the top 80 in the ATP rankings.

As if the loss wasn’t bad enough, Monfils was later subject to racial abuse online as well, something he will now need to push to the back of his mind as he takes to court for his opening round match of this ATP 500 encounter.

Monfils has had some success on clay in the past but on this surface his main issue has been consistency. For instance, he has been a semifinalist at the French Open, one of only two times Monfils has made the semifinal at a Grand Slam. And a finalist at the Monte-Carlo Masters in 2016 and two-time quarterfinalist at Madrid.

That, however, has been juxtaposed with a string of early losses at other editions of the same tournaments. Overall, he has been a six-time finalist in ATP events on clay and won just one of them – a victory which came in 2005.

Hanfmann Takes a Dramatic Ranking Leap

At the start of the resumption of tennis, Yannick Hanfmann was ranked 170th in the world. In a span of just a month, he has come close to his best ATP ranking – now just two spots behind the career-best of 99.

And that’s thanks to his showing across two of the four clay-court tournaments he has played in – a Challenger which he won at Todi in Italy and the Kitzbuhel Open where, as a qualifier Hanfmann made it all the way through to the final.

The other point to note there is the “four clay-court tournaments” bit. This is over and above the string of matches Hanfmann played on clay during the pandemic break as well, making it seem like he has never been away from competitive tennis.

That could play a huge role in this encounter, playing against a top-ranked player but one who has featured in just one clay court match this season.

Monfils v Hanfmann Prediction and Tip

This might turn out to be a fighting battle but one that turns out in favour of Monfils in the end. Three-setter probably.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
