Felix Auger-Aliassime v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head

Auger-Aliassime and Sonego haven’t met each other before this.

Canadian Upstart Seeking First Win on Clay in 2020

Felix Auger-Aliassime’s rise in the last 18 months has been nothing short of meteoric. However, despite enjoying a breakthrough year in 2019 in which he recorded 38 match wins in his first season on the senior tour, he struggled to find his footing once the page turned to the early part 2020.

Auger-Aliassime went 3-4 between the ATP Cup and Adelaide (that was despite reaching the semifinals in the latter), and was beaten to then world no.256 Ernests Gulbis in the first round of the Australian Open, preserving his winless record at the hard court Grand Slams until the just-concluded US Open in which he reached the fourth round.

The Canadian youngster did play exceptionally well during the brief indoor hard-court season in February in which he made back-to-back finals, but continued to stumble at the last hurdle. The 20-year-old lost in Rotterdam and Marseille finals, and worryingly he is yet win a single set in the five championship matches he has contested in his career.

Auger-Aliassime is certainly going to have better days, and despite losing in the first round of Rome Masters, he still possesses a decent record on clay from the last 12 months. He went 12-8 last year on the surface, and made his maiden ATP tour final on the clay courts of Rio. He also reached the final in Lyon just before the French Open.

Sonego More At Home on Clay

Lorenzo Sonego has an appalling record in non-clay events this year. He lost in the first round of Doha, Auckland and the Australian Open. In desperate need to post a win on the board, he embarked on a three-week oscillation in the South American swing where he continued to falter two more times before he won a match.

Sonego reached the quarterfinals in Rio, beating seasoned campaigners Leonardo Mayer and Dusan Lajovic before losing to Borna Coric. During tennis’ hiatus, he would go on to win a pair of exhibition events on clay in his native Itay: the Campionati Italiani Assoluti and the Italian National Tour, losing just two sets across both tournaments.

The 25-year-old Turin native made his return to hard courts at the Cincinnati Masters, but was unable to end his winless drought on the surface, as was the case at the US Open too. He has since returned to winning ways, scoring a fine week over Nikoloz Basilashvili in Rome.

At no.47 in the rankings, Sonego will make his main draw debut at the Hamburg Open.

Auger-Aliassime v Sonego Prediction and Tip

This will be a big test for Auger-Aliassime against a player who naturally prefers to be on clay than fast hard courts. The Canadian though should have a slight edge in a battle between two pure baseliners.

Tip: Auger-Aliassime to win: 1/2 (bet365)
