While Anisimova’s talent has never been in question, it was at the 2019 French Open she looked to have announced herself with a sterling run that took her to the semifinal. While Anisimova lost to the eventual champion Ash Barty, it was not before she had overcome the pair of Aryna Sabalenka and Simona Halep during the course of her semifinal appearance.
Interestingly, Anisimova’s only WTA tournament win has also come on clay when she clinched the WTA Bogota competition in April 2019, but at the Premier competitions she hasn’t done as well. A best return of a qualifier appearance at the Madrid Open and a couple of second round shows in Rome don’t do too much justice to the oodles of talent the American possesses.
The second of those two second round appearances at the Italian Open came earlier this week where she overcame Donna Vekic in round one but then blew away a set lead to lose to Dayana Yastremska in the second.
Given she opted not to travel to Europe earlier to participate in Palermo or Prague, those Rome matches were the only ones she has played on clay, prompting her to feature here in Strasbourg heading into the French Open. She would hope for a couple of solid results here.

Teichmann Opts to Give Clay a Miss
The Swiss world number 54, Teichmann had won both, the Palermo Open and the Prague Open in 2019. It formed a part of her awesome 25-6 record on clay last season but given the change in rankings rules this season, Teichmann opted not to defend either of those titles, instead looking to play on the hard courts of USA.
And while she did make it to the final at the Lexington Open and as a qualifier pushed on till the second round at the Cincinnati Open, an opening loss at the US Open and another such defeat in Rome have left her with no option but to play here in Strasbourg.
Another such underwhelming result could push her preparations back but playing a strong opponent like Anisimova means she would want to dish out a fighting performance at the very least. Or may be one which takes her close to a title win like the two she did last season.
