Benoit Paire v Casper Ruud Head to Head

This will be the second time the pair will be playing each other in a competitive match. In their only prior meeting, it was the Norwegian who won in straight sets in the qualifying round of the Madrid Masters last year.

Paire Desperate for a Win

Things have not gone according to the plans for the 31-year-old Frenchman since the season resumed. He had to retire midway through his first-round match at the Cincinnati Open due to illness. He was later found to be positive for Covid-19 and had to withdraw from the US Open. So after waiting for over a month he returned back to competitive action at Rome and once again lost in the first round.

As a result, Paire will be desperate to finally notch up his first win and get some form behind him going into his home Grand Slam. Overall it has been a mixed bag when it comes to results for Paire this season.

He started the season really brightly with winning two matches at the ATP Cup and followed it up with a run to the finals at the Auckland Open. However, Paire crashed out in the opening two rounds of five consecutive tournaments after that.

This is the seventh time he is playing at this tournament. His best run here was back in 2015 when he reached the quarter-final.

Ruud Coming Off an Impressive Run in Rome

The Norwegian’s performances have steadily got better with each passing week since the season resumed. He looked short of match fitness during the Thiem’s Seven exhibition event in Austria and crashed out in the first round at Cincinnati. But he was much better at the US Open where he reached the third open.

Continuing that trend last week, he was really impressive in Rome where he reached the last four before losing out to Novak Djokovic. He had a tough run in and beat Karen Khachanov, Lorenzo Sonego, Marin Cilic and Matteo Berrettini on his way to the semis.

Overall he has been really solid on the clay courts this season. He won at Buenos Aires earlier in the season and also reached the finals at Santiago. He will be hoping to continue that run this week and at least go better than his round of 16 run here from last year.

Benoit Paire v Casper Ruud Prediction and Tip

Although Paire is the higher-ranked amongst the two, Ruud will start this match as the favourite. The 21-year-old is in excellent form and Paire still hasn’t quite got his rhythm back since the resumption. The only concern for the Norwegian could be fatigue after playing five matches in a week.

Tip: Ruud to win in straight sets: 2/3 (bet365)
