Karen Khachanov v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head

The players have met twice in their careers, on the ATP tour. Incidentally, both meetings were in 2019 with Khachanov winning on the grass courts at Halle, and Struff winning at the Paris Masters 1000 where the Russian was defending his title. Both matches went to a decider and this will be their first meeting on clay

Khachanov’s Season Looking For Direction & Consistency

Karen Khachanov is part of the now not so recently coined term, ‘Next Gen’ , i.e. the group of individuals billed to take on the mantle from the Big Three.  A Masters 1000 title win in Paris in 2018, defeating Novak Djokovic in the final ensured that Khachanov broke into the top ten of the ATP rankings.

He was also the second member of the incoming generation to win a Masters 1000 at the time, after Alexander Zverev, and one expected bigger things around the corner.

2019 had big expectations from the Russian, and although he made the quarter-finals of the French Open, a poor end to the season followed. This included an early loss at Paris as he sought to defend his title, to none other than Struff.  2020 got off to another mixed start for the Russian, losing a thriller at the Australian Open to home favorite Nick Kyrgios.

With a big serve and a devastating forehand, Khachanov remains a huge threat on the faster surfaces, and was looking to return to consistent form and results at this year’s US Open.

However, he was down two sets to one in his opener to Jannik Sinner. Although he came back to win that in five sets, Khachanov lost control of a two sets to one lead against Alex de Minaur, only to lose in five sets in the third round of the US Open.

Khachanov ran into a difficult opener against Casper Ruud at the Italian Open, where the Russian lost to the eventual semi-finalist, and will be looking to get match practice and confidence on clay ahead of the French Open next week.

Struff Looking For Another Good Run On Clay

German Jan-Lennard Struff, despite being a big server has a strong record on clay and that is largely due to his ability to play a good baseline game as well. Struff has won plenty of titles on the Challenger Tour on clay and has also made it to the fourth round of a Grand Slam on just one occasion and that came at the French Open the previous year.

Struff had a decent run on the US hard courts making the final eight at the Western & Southern Open, and the third round at the US Open. On both occasions, his good run was stopped by world number one Novak Djokovic.

The German will be disappointed with his initial return to clay this season with an opening round loss at the Rome ATP Masters 1000 to Federico Coria in straight sets and will be looking for a good run at the Hamburg Open to salvage confidence on clay, ahead of the Grand Slam next week.

Khachanov v Struff Prediction and Tip

Neither player has been in the best of forms on clay, but both have what it takes the other down here. Their two meetings in the past have been close, and this should be another close one too. Expect the German to win the match in three sets, based on his superior skills on the slow surface.

Tip: Struff to win in three sets: 15/4 (bet365)
