Kiki Bertens v Jelena Ostapenko Head to Head

There have been three previous matches played between Bertens and Ostapenko before this. The first came in an ITF match in 2015 on clay and Ostapenko won it in three sets. This was followed by Bertens registering back to back straight set wins at the 2016 Wimbledon and 2019 Madrid Open.

Bertens Knocked out of Rome Early

When the season was prematurely suspended by the pandemic, Bertens had only just begun to get started. She had reached the fourth round at the Australian Open where she went down to Garbine Muguruza and then won back to back matches in the Fed Cup.

The peak came at the St. Petersburg Open where notched up her 10th title win beating the likes of Ekaterina Alexandrova and Elena Rybakina. Little over a fortnight later, the pandemic had struck and sports all over the world had to be called off as a result.

Since then, the world number eight hasn’t participated in a lot of tennis, a match at the bett1 Aces and another at the Bett tournament – losing both. And when tennis resumed after the break, she opted not to travel to USA, or even play in the earlier clay court tournaments in Prague and Palermo.

When she finally began her post-pandemic campaign in Rome, the rustiness was there for all to see, and the six-time clay court tournament winner lost her opener to Polona Hercog. The former French Open semifinalist now has another chance to get going before her trip to Roland-Garros next week.

Ostapenko Finally Wins One

When Ostapenko registered her 6-2, 6-3 victory over Lauren Davis in the first round of this competition in Strasbourg it was the first match she had won, all tennis included, since February 25.

Since then, she had played only four matches, obviously not too many, including a couple of exhibition games but struggled to do much of note. Opting out of the American swing, and having not featured in the earlier European tournaments either – much like Bertens – Ostapenko fell in round one of the Italian Open to Magda Linette.

The point to note though is Ostapenko’s issues run deeper than they being just a case of rustiness – which is the current problem for Bertens. While she did win a title in 2019, her overall win-loss record last year read an underwhelming 26-28, and even before that was a mere 28-22.

The former French Open winner now has a task on her hand when she takes on Bertens, the world number eight.

Bertens v Ostapenko Prediction & Tip

This should be an easy one for Bertens despite having not played too many matches since return. A straight-set victory for Bertens.

Tip: Bertens to win in straight sets: 11/10 (bet365)
