Petra Martic v Misaki Doi Head to Head

There has been one previous encounter between Martic and Doi before this and it came in the first round of the 2013 Australian Open. Doi had won that one in straight sets, making it the only instance of her making the second of that tournament.

Martic Hoping for Most Consistency

Croatia’s number one Petra Martic has some good days and then when it seems like things are going her way, she has been dispelled from tournaments.

Like at the Prague Open in August, she fell to Kristyna Pliskova in the second round after having made the semifinal of the Palermo Open before that.

At the US Open she did well to enter the fourth round, and should have put it across Yulia Putintseva but went down in three. And then again in Rome, after getting an opening bye, she lost to Putintseva again in the second round.

Even earlier in the season, Martic was a semifinalist at the WTA Dubai, but the very next tournament she played in, in Doha, the Croat went down to Barbora Strycova in her opener.

What will worry Martic is the defeats aren’t against top opponents – as a seeded player she typically avoids playing them early – but they still come about immediately after a solid showing. That’s something she would want to turn around.

Doi in Horrible Touch in 2020

When Misaki Doi made it to the second round at the Istanbul Open in the second week of September, it was her first ever main draw of the season. Granted the tennis calendar has been trimmed down by about six months but Doi was playing in her eighth WTA tournament of the season.

She followed that win up with a 6-2, 6-0 defeat to Patricia Maria Tig in the second round and then lost another opener at the Italian Open.

This comes on the back of Doi’s first WTA title in 2019 after three years, a tournament she went on clay. Interestingly, that was a shock win given Doi’s most preferred surface isn’t clay having reached the second round at the French Open just once.

With Martic finding his best form typically on clay, Doi will have her hands full coming into this opening round clash as she looks to register just her second win of the season.

Martic v Doi Prediction and Tip

Martic is a clear-cut favourite to win this but we would refrain from calling it a straight-set win because of the unpredictable nature of the two players. Instead, going for a games handicap for this.

Tip: Games Handicap Doi +5.5: 5/6 (bet365)
