Borna Coric v Norbert Gombos Head to Head

The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the 23-year-old Croat, and the Slovenian who is seven years his senior.

Coric, a Quarter Finalist in New York

Although Coric is not widely regarded as a clay court player, one of his two senior ATP titles came on that surface in Marrakesh in 2017. He was also a beaten finalist in Morocco a year earlier. However. he does not have a particularly good record in Paris, where he has never been further than the third round, a stage he has reached on three occasions, most recently last year.

Earlier in 2020 he reached the semi-finals in Rio on clay, before losing to Christian Garin, but by far his best result of the year came at the US Open where he reached the quarter final of a Grand Slam for the first time, beating Stefanos Tsitsipas along the way. His run was eventually ended by Alexander Zverev.

Since then he gained his revenge on Garin in the first round of the Rome Masters, before then losing to the Italian clay court specialist Stefano Travaglia.

Gombos Playing for the First time in Paris Main Draw

This is the first time that the 30-year old from Slovenia has made the main draw in Paris – his previous best was to reach the third round of qualifying three years ago.

That is in some ways surprising, because, of the junior tours where he spends most of his time, five of his ten tournament wins have come on that surface, most recently in Bratislava last June.

In terms of the senior tour in 2020, he qualified for the Australian Open for the first time, but then lost in the first round, and then enjoyed a run to the third round in Montpellier before losing to Gael Monfils.

Since lockdown he qualified for the Cincinnati Open but lost in the first round to Marton Fucsovics, and then one his first ever Grand Slam match at the US Open, before losing to Marin Cilic.

Coric v Gombos Prediction and Tip

There is nothing in Gombos; past or present record to suggest he is capable of pulling off an upset in this match. Coric should win with ease.

Tip: Coric to win in straight sets: 4/5 (bet365)
