Zverev Just Keeps Getting Better in 2020
In 2020, Alexander Zverev seems to have worked out the formula to succeed in Grand Slams. Till the start of this year, the German had never made it past the last eight in majors, having reached that stage only twice at Roland Garros in 2018 and 2019. But this year has been a bit different for the 6’6” right-hander who is finally showing why he is rated so highly by the tennis fraternity.
The 2018 ATP Finals champion, Zverev started the year by reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open and followed it up with a stellar run at the US Open, reaching the final of the tournament, before suffering a remarkable meltdown against Austria’s Dominic Thiem in the title clash, losing the battle after having taken a two-sets-to-love lead.
His run in Melbourne was also cut short by Thiem, who eventually lost the final to Novak Djokovic.
It’s one of the newest rivalries developing in tennis and has the potential of going a long way. Will we see a Zverev v Thiem matchup at Roland Garros this year? They are in the same half and could meet in the semifinals, but for Zverev to make it that far, he may have to beat the “king of clay,” Rafael Nadal in a potential quarterfinal.
The 23-year-old German, 12-7 this year, will be hoping to add to his 11 singles titles in Paris this year. It won’t be easy but a good start against Novak will definitely instill a lot of confidence in him.

Huge Challenge For Novak
Dennis Novak is in the French Open main draw for the first time. The 27-year-old Austrian right-hander has enjoyed success at the Futures level but is yet to produce a significant result in the top-tier.
Novak, who has a 17-25 career record in singles, is 4-8 this year. His best Grand Slam performance came at the Wimbledon in 2018, when he reached the third round. His other three main draw appearances in Grand Slams ended in first round exits.
To surprise Zverev, Novak will have to punch above his weight.
