It was somewhat cruel that Diego Schwartzman’s perfect week at Foro Italico would entail besting two Grand champions in Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in order to win his first Masters 1000 title. It is undoubtedly one of the most difficult feats in tennis, but despite falling short in the championship match, he still achieved two huge milestones during the course of last week.
Schwartzman became the eighth Argentine to reach a Masters 1000 final and en route, he stunned nine-time champion Nadal at the 10th attempt in the quarterfinal. It was a defeat that has thrown a spanner in the works at pre-tournament predictions in Rome and now at Roland Garros where the Spaniard might not be invincible after all.
It is a different kettle of fish with Rafa at Roland Garros of course and not that we should get ahead of ourselves, but Schwartzman has every reason to believe he could beat anybody in quest for a breakthrough at the French Open. The diminutive 28-year-old has a rough opener, coming up against rising Serbian star Miomir Kecmanovic and is projected to face two-time finalist Dominic Thiem in the quarterfinals.
Schwartzman’s failure to win the Italian Masters meant he fell just short in his attempt to crack the top-10 of the ATP rankings, but he could do so should he produce the sort of tennis he played in Rome on the Parisian dirt.

Kecmanovic Bagged His First Career Title in Kitzbuhel
Miomir Kecmanovic became just the fourth first-time winner on the ATP tour in 2020 (a stat largely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic), when he won the Generali Open in Kitzbuhel a couple of weeks ago.
Consequently, he was the second Next Gen ATP champion in 2020, following in the footsteps of Brazil’s Thiago Seyboth Wild who triumphed in Santiago just before tennis was temporarily suspended.
For Kecmanovic, it has been the same mojo that a few of his contemporaries employed, working hard and letting his tennis do the talking. A year on after spurning championship point in his defeat to Lorenzo Sonego in Antalya, Kecmanovic made two semifinal showings in Doha and New York Open during the first quarter of the season.
The Serbian has taken a particular liking for faster hard courts and it came as a surprise to see him claim his maiden title on clay. Although the altitude in Austria certainly helped in thwarting the likes of Nishikori, Jordan Thompson, Federico Delbonis and Yannick Hanfmann, he is slowly developing into an all-court player.
Kecmanovic has climbed into the world’s top-40 for the first time last week, and this will mark his second appearance at the French Open where he won his first match last year against Denis Kudla.
Schwartzman v Kecmanovic Prediction and Tip
Both players have recorded a string of great results on clay, but Diego Schwartzman should be the clear favorite in this one. Beating Nadal on clay should do him a world of good and I think right now he is operating at a different level to Kecmanovic who will definitely put up a fight in this one.
