Karolina Muchova v Christina McHale Head to Head

Muchova Made Fourth Round at US Open

Muchova shot to fame with her performance at the 2019 Wimbledon where she made the quarterfinals, her first ever Grand Slam last-eight appearance. While she couldn’t quite get off the blocks at the Australian Open earlier this year, the Czech did well to get past Venus Williams, Anna Kalinskaya and Sorana Cirstea to enter the fourth round at the US Open.

Here’s what is interesting though. As a Czech, she neither played at the Prague Open before the US Open series, nor did she participate in the clay court tournaments after her trip to Flushing Meadows. What this leaves her is without any competitive clay court practice in the lead-up to the French Open.

The world number 26 did feature in a handful of exhibition matches on clay during the pandemic break though. Muchova played eight matches and won six of them, losing a couple.

Muchova’s best showing on clay came at the Prague Open last year too, where she reached the final before losing to Jil Teichmann. What the Czech would now want is to convert that into a solid French Open showing, a tournament where she has never gone beyond the second round before this.

McHale in Form Strife

While her pre-pandemic form could have been a tad better, McHale has really struggled post the break. Returning back to feature at the Cincinnati Open, she made it through the qualifiers and then won a couple of rounds against solid opponents to raise hope of a good start but things have generally looked downhill after that.

At the US Open, McHale lasted two sets, losing to Sorana Cirstea in the opener. And then shifting to clay wasn’t the easiest exercise for the American, as she fell to Katarzyna Kawa in a qualifier at Rome.

While McHale managed to win her qualifier at Strasbourg, her stint in the tournament was ended in round one by Zarina Diyas. While it was a fighting match, the lack of main draw victories over the past month or so would be a matter of concern for the 81st-ranked McHale.

And she now enters a competition where she hasn’t won a main draw match since 2012. Six first round exits were followed by a qualifying round one ouster last season, leaving McHale with a huge task of surmounting Muchova in her opener.

Muchova v McHale Prediction and Tip

A fairly straightforward win for Muchova in this one with an offer of 8/13 for a straight-set win catching eye.

Tip: Muchova to win in straight sets: 8/13 (bet365)
