Pablo Carreno Busta v John Millman Head to Head

World No. 18 Pablo Carreno Busta has a 2-1 edge over World No. 43 John Millman. None of those three matches came on clay, with their last meeting having come in Stockholm in 2019, which was won by the Spaniard.

Carreno Busta Looking To Bring New York Memories to Paris

Ever since winning his first title in Winston-Salem in 2016, Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta has shown constant improvement in his game. The 29-year-old Spaniard has not only added three more singles titles to his repertoire, but has made his presence felt in Grand Slams as well, reaching the semifinals of the US Open twice (2017 and 2020) and the quarterfinals of the French Open in 2017.

The 17th seed enters the 2020 French Open on back of a fabulous U.S. Open showing, where he reached the final four before being edged out by Alexander Zverev in a five-set thriller.

Some might say he got a tad lucky in the Round of 16 after Novak Djokovic was defaulted for smashing the ball in anger that accidentally hit a line judge, but it was only after Carreno Busta had broken the No. 1 seed and taken a 6-5 lead in the first set.

Being in the top half of the draw, the Spaniard could meet the Serb once again, this time in the quarterfinals. But to make it that far he will have to oust some solid players in the earlier rounds, starting with Millman in the opener. If he does win a couple of matches he could be up against Roberto Bautista Agut in the third round and Matteo Berrettinni in the fourth round.

On clay, Carreno Busta has played just one match in the run up to the Paris event, losing to Rafael Nadal in straight sets in the first round of the Italian Open. The right-hander, who is 12-8 in 2020, also lost to Nadal in the third round of the Australian Open earlier this year.

Millman Can Be a Tricky Opponent

In what is being seen as one of the top fixtures of the first round, Carreno Busta will face World No. 43 Australian John Millman, who made internationals headlines in 2018, after he shocked Roger Federer in the fourth round of the U.S. Open.

The 31-year-old Aussie, who is yet to win a singles title on the tour, has never won a main draw match at the French Open, bowing out of the first round on all four of his previous appearances (from 2016 to 2019).

He has made the third round of the Australian Open and Wimbledon twice. His most recent Grand Slam appearance was at the U.S. Open this year where he won his first round encounter against Nikoloz Basilashvilli, but was ousted by Frances Tiafoe in a five-set second round.

The right-hander from Brisbane is 11-8 this year, having reached the quarterfinals of the ASB Classic and the third round of the Australian Open, where he tested Federer once again, taking the veteran to the decider before falling in the final set tie-break.

Clay is not Millman’s preferred surface, but he is a competitor and won’t make it easy for Carreno Busta.

Carreno Busta v Millman Prediction and Tip

Millman will put up a fight but in the end Carreno Busta should come out victorious in four sets.

Tip: Carreno Busta to win in four sets: 11/4 (bet365)
