World number 75 and former French Open runnerup Venus Williams will kick-start her Roland-Garros campaign with a match against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in the first round match of the 2020 French Open. This encounter will be played on Sunday, September 28 and begins at around 1 pm local time (12 noon BST and 7 am Eastern Time). Venus Williams v Anna Karolina Schmiedlova Head to Head
This will be the fourth time that Venus and Schmiedlova will be going up against each other. In the previous three meetings, Schmiedlova has won twice, including once as recently as the Monterrey Open earlier this year where she defeated Venus in three sets.
They had also met in the 2014 French Open and Schmiedlova had needed three sets to edge past her American opponent there as well.

Who would have thought that Venus Williams’ only win after returning back from the pandemic break would come against Victoria Azarenka. It was a rare defeat for Azarenka and since then she has rocketed off to one win after another.
On the other hand, Venus hasn’t won a match since that encounter. She faced sister Serena Williams in the next match there in Lexington and lost a tough three-setter – one which saw her being up a break in the final set too.
That was followed by a Cincinnati Open first round defeat to Dayana Yastremska, also in three sets, before she lost to Karolina Muchova and Azarenka in the first rounds of the US Open and Italian Open respectively.
That Rome match was Venus’ only one on clay this year and following on from the three she played last season and four in the one before that, it’s not been a lot of clay court participation for the American.

Schmiedlova Playing a Lot on Clay
Even during the pandemic break, Schmiedlova featured in a few tennis tournaments on clay to get herself ready for the challenges that lay ahead. And she did well in a few of them as well, leading to one in Zilina which went on to win before her tour resumed.
At the Prague Open, a competition played for lower circuit, Schmiedlova went on to win four rounds to make it to the quarterfinal, before moving on to the Istanbul Open – her first top-level WTA tournament since the Monterrey Open in March.
Schmiedlova won her opener against Kaja Juvan in that match, before losing a hard-fought encounter to Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
She has lost won a main draw match at the French Open in 2014, losing in the first round at each of the following editions here she participated in. In fact Schmiedlova’s last main draw victory in a Grand Slam came in the 2015 US Open, which is a long time without a win!
Venus v Schmiedlova Prediction and Tip
Despite Schmiedlova’s poor record at recent Grand Slams, she starts off a favourite here because of the amount of practice she has had on clay as compared to Venus Williams. Backing this to be a three-setter because of Venus’ fighting spirit.
