Thompson High On Confidence After US Open

The 26-year-old Australian went into the US Open earlier this month having lost more matches then he had won this season. Only once in his career, he had made it past the second round of a Grand Slam in 21 attempts. And he had just played two matches after a six-month break.

What followed was an impressive week of tennis where the Thompson reached the round of 16.

He was clinical and enjoyed the faster courts a lot before going down to Borna Coric. And despite the fact that he went out in the second round at Kitzbuhel, he did take out much higher-ranked fellow Australian John Millman in his opener.

Even though his record on the clay court is rather modest, the recent results will surely give him a lot of confidence.

For someone who made his debut almost a decade ago, Thompson has only seen relative success in the last couple of years. He has achieved his career-best rankings on multiple occasions in the last two seasons.

He reached eight challenger finals in 2018 whilst winning three. Last season he reached the round of 16 of a Masters 1000 tournament for the first time. And then came very close to winning his maiden title at Hertogenbosch where he reached the finals.

Albot Yet to Win a Main Draw Match This Season

This is turning out to be a dreadful season for the 30-year-old Moldovan. He lost all the three matches at the season-opening ATP Cup and then had to withdraw from Rotterdam due to a shoulder injury. After that, he failed to defend his maiden title from the Delray Beach and went out from the first round there as well.

Things went bad to worse when he crashed out in the opening round at Acapulco and even at the Indian Wells challenger. He would have been hoping for a change in fortune post the season resumption but at Cincinnati, he couldn’t even make it past the qualifying stage. Change in surfaces also did him little favour as he crashed out from Kitzbuhel and Rome in the opening round too.

The 30-year-old did finally win his first match of the season when he won the opening qualifying round at Hamburg, And Albot will have to quickly pick up his form if he is to stop the slide of dropping down the rankings ladder. He was as high as 39 last year but has dropped to 79 now.

Jordan Thompson v Radu Albot Prediction and Tip

Albot’s losing streak will continue here as the Australian will progress to the next round. Thompson has been riding a wave of confidence at the moment and that is something his opponent doesn’t have. It should be a comfortable win for Thompson in the end.

Tip: Thompson to win in three sets: 9/4 (bet365)
