Since his return to the tour in 2018-2019, it has been a steadily improving return for Wawrinka, following his injury issues. In 2019, he was a quarter-finalist at both the French & US Open, and had some crucial wins against the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas, Grigor Dimitrov and most importantly Novak Djokovic. He also returned to the top 20 of the ATP rankings.
As 2020 started, Wawrinka looked like getting back to his best. A semi-final at Doha, was followed by quarter-final appearances at both the Australian Open and the Acapulco ATP 500, and among other wins included the scalp of Daniil Medvedev in Melbourne.
The 2015 French Open champion did not have the best return to clay on the main tour, with an opening round loss in Rome to Lorenzo Musetti, the rising Italian teenager. However, the Swiss is well equipped on clay and arrived in Paris looking for a good run at the last major of the year of a curtailed season.
Up against an old and familiar opponent in Andy Murray, Wawrinka’s opener was the statement clash of Day One at Roland Garros. However, the match turned out to be among the most one sided with Murray only winning six games in what turned out to be a straight sets route.
The Swiss former world number three made the most of the heavy conditions and was able to successfuly hit through Murray. The former world number one from Great Britain has alluded to this being one of the heaviest defeats of his career that needs introspection.
After the match Wawrinka spoke about the conditions and said:
“Happy [that in] those conditions I can still play heavy with my game from both sides. So I use those tough conditions, heavy conditions, slow conditions to still play powerful tennis.”
The Swiss has been here before and will be high on confidence after such a win and be looking to make week two at the Open as a next goal.

Koepfer On a Run This Month
US based Koepfer enjoyed a career-best season in 2019, where he won his first title at the ATP Challenger on grass, and won his first major match at Wimbledon soon thereafter.
He followed this with a good run at the 2019 US Open where he reached the fourth round as a qualifier, defeating Reilly Opelka and Nikoloz Basilashvili along the way before losing to eventual runner-up Daniil Medvedev in four sets.
Recently having broken into the top 100 of the rankings, the German put up a strong display at the Rome Masters 1000 recording convincing wins against Aussie Alex de Minaur and top ten ranked French veteran Gael Monfils. He even took a set off Novak Djokovic before losing the quarter finals in a decider.
He followed this with a fair showing at Hamburg as well, losing a tight battle to Roberto Bautista Agut.
At the back of a good run on clay, Koepfer played Frenchman Antoine Hang in the opening round of the French Open here, and looked in good touch except a concentration drop that saw him lose the second set. The German regained his focus only dropping two games in the last two sets and continuing his strong play on both fronts from the baseline, looking like a player high on self-belief.
With grit and strong baseline shot making, Koepfer is not one to be taken lightly on clay and Wawrinka will be well aware of it.

Koepfer’s current form makes for an interesting second round encounter here. Wawrinka has the experience and looked good in the opener, but his German opponent has consistently done well on the clay this month.
The Swiss will look to get off to a good start, and can be expected to win the battle in four sets.
