Khachanov Poised for Another Good Run at Roland Garros

The number 15 seed Khachanov had his best ever run at a Grand Slam in this event last year, when he reached the quarter-finals, and he will be hoping of another good performance deep into the tournament this time round after making a confident start against Kamil Majchrzak of Poland on Monday.

The first set was right on the money for the Russian, with the Pole being made to work twice to hold on to his serve. It was actually he who drew first blood in the tie-break, but two breaks of serve in quick succession were enough to give Khachanov the set.

The Russian promptly dropped his own serve in the first game of the second set, but, three games later, broke back to establish parity, and broke once more to consolidate his lead.

The pair swapped service breaks at the start of the third set, but then the Pole faltered, dropped his serve twice more allowing the Russian to close out the match in a little under two hours. He won 7-6, 6-3, 6-3, which is a good start given he had earlier fallen in the first round of the Rome Masters and the second round at Hamburg.

Vesely Makes Round Two Here Again

Vesely is into the second round in Paris for the fourth time, although he has not reached this stage since 2017.

He was handed a relatively easy first round draw against the British qualifier, Liam Broady, ranked 207 in the world  and a player not known for his ability on a clay court, but made comparatively hard work of it, winning in four sets.

The Czech started well enough, breaking the Briton’s serve twice to romp through the first set, but then lost his own in the 11th game of the second set, allowing Broady to level.

Broady actually briefly edged ahead in the third when he broke the Vesely serve, but normal service was soon restored, and two successive breaks gave the Czech player the third set.

By this point Broady was tiring and two more breaks in the fourth set enabled Vesely to serve out the match after the best part of three hours, winning 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.

Earlier Vesely had made it to the second round at the Hamburg Open as a qualifier to give him some confidence coming into this tournament.

Khachanov v Vesely Prediction and Tip

Khachanov will begin as the clear favourite for this match. Not only is he the seed and the higher ranked player, but, if the evidence of the first-round is a reliable guide, he is playing with confidence with both players having made similar strides in the lead-up tournaments.

Tip: Khachanov to win AND Both players to win a set: 6/4 (bet365)
