Sandgren Whips up a Thriller

Sandgren was on the receiving end of a thriller at the Australian Open earlier this year when he gave up on a golden chance to defeat Roger Federer in that one. And in the opening round at this French Open, it looked like history was going to repeat itself when he bungled up a 40-0 lead on serve to close out the match in the fifth set.

Describing his emotions after the match, Sandgren said:

“I looked at my coach and said, ‘Would this happen to anyone but me right now?’ I’d lost my serve twice after being up a break in the fifth at love.”

Let’s reverse that a little. Sandgren had earlier come back from two sets to one down in his first round match against Herbert Hurkacz to win the fourth set in a tie-breaker and force a decider.

And in that fifth set, he was up a break twice, once at 2-0, and then at 4-2, to be only broken back after that. With no tie-breaks in the final set at Roland-Garros, the match went on till 9-9 and strangely neither player got any chance to break the other before that 19th game of the set.

Sandgren broke his Polish opponent for the third time in the set and then whipped out a 40-0 lead, but just when it looked like things had moved in his direction, he lost four successive points to face a break-point.

The American saved two of them and then went on to win his fourth match-point which he finally converted to pocket the marathon and set up a second round meeting with Galan.

Galan Comes Back from 2-1 Down Too

While it wasn’t quite a thriller by the Sandgren match standards, Galan would be thrilled no ends with his first round win. The lucky loser who had earlier this year played in his very first main draw match at a Grand Slam during the Australian Open, made it his first win at one with a five-setter against Britain’s Cameron Norrie.

And like Sandgren he was down two sets to one as well, only to recapture his rhythm and scythe through his opponent’s serve over the next two sets. Galan won the final two sets 6-1, 6-1 to move towards his maiden second round appearance, after his campaign looked like it was over when he lost to Henri Laaksonen in the third round of qualifying.

The 24-year-old is a seven-time clay court competition finalist over the course of his ITF and Challengers campaigns, having won one of them but that victory had come in 2018 – the last time he made a final.

Galan has two hard court titles at the lower level too, possesses a better record on the hard courts than clay but with his opening round performance, he might not be one to be trifled with complacency as an opponent.

Sandgren v Galan Prediction and Tip

Sandgren is the most obvious favourite at 11/5 but I wouldn’t discount Galan from winning at least one especially given his opponent would be that much more exhausted from playing that long a five-setter.

Tip: Sandgren to win AND Both players to win a set: 6/4 (bet365)
