Nishioka Pulls off a Win Against the Odds

Not many expected the 25-year-old Japanese to even take off a set against his higher-ranked Canadian opponent, let along win the match in straight sets.

Nishioka had lost four out of the five matches he had played since the season resumed while Auger-Aliassime was in the round of 16 just a few weeks ago at the US Open. But the Japanese player made minimum errors and capitalised on every single opportunity he got.

The first two sets were won on the basis of a single break of serve thanks to the combination of putting a higher percentage of serves in as well as winning more points on the return that got Nishioka over the line.

The 25-year-old was one of those players for whom the season suspension had come at a wrong time. His start to the 2020 season was very impressive as he reached the finals at Delray Beach Open and won two matches each at the ATP Cup and the Australian Open.

With this win, however, he has already kick-started bit of a recovery and the world number 52 is just five short of achieving his career-best ranking. Another win here should not only get him that but also will be his best-ever showing in Paris.

First ATP Tour Win for the Local Boy Gaston

In the battle of the wildcard entrants Gaston, the 20-year-old Frenchman made progressed in straight sets.

This was also his first win on the ATP tour after losing on the previous two occasions when he played at this level. His opponent in the first round was world number 204 Maxime Janvier from Mexico who was on a five-match losing run.

Gaston has been rising up the rankings quickly in the last year or so. He was not even officially ranked midway through last season and was outside of top 350 this time last year. He won four ITF tournaments last year and made it to the main draw at the Australian Open earlier this year.

After this tournament, he is likely to break into the top 200 but it would be interesting to see how far he can climb the rankings. He is just 5 feet 8 and he will have to develop his overall game accordingly in order to succeed at the top level, and if he can push Nishioka in this match, it could go a long way in boosting that confidence for the times to come.

Yoshihito Nishioka v Hugo Gaston Prediction and Tip

Nishioka should go through to the third round easily. Gaston doesn’t quite have the game yet in order to trouble the Japanese.

Tip: Nishioka to win in four sets: 11/4 (bet365)
