Kukushkin Caused a Big Upset in the First Round

The Kazakh player was up against former top 10 player & 14th seed Fabio Foginini in the first round. Fognini has also won eight out of his nine career titles on clay but it was Kukushkin who played the pressure points better in this match.

At one set each, the 32-year-old came back from 4-2 down in the third set to take the set as well as win the fourth set without dropping a game.

This win continues the turn around that the Kazakh player is having in his season. Before the season was disrupted and stopped, Kukushkin had only won one out of seven main draw matches this year.

This run almost saw him drop out of the top 100 in rankings. But since the season resumed, Kukushkin has looked a lot like the player who was as high as 39 in the ranking last season. The Kazakh reached the third round at the US Open and won two matches during the qualifying stages in Rome.

This is the 13th time that the player is playing here in Paris. But he has never managed to go past the second round. So he will be keen to continue his winning run and achieve a personal best showing at the tournament.

Qualifier Martinez is High On Confidence

The 23-year-old Spaniard has already won 25 matches on clay this season and is about to break into the top 100 rankings for the first time in his career. Martinez reached the second round at Rome last week after going through the qualifying stages. And now here at Roland Garros, he is once again repeating that run and has won four matches in last one week.

In the first-round match, the Spaniard was up against another qualifier, Aleksandar Vukic and Martinez took just over two hours to progress to the next round.

Even though Martinez hasn’t seen a lot of success on the ATP tour, he has won a lot of matches and tournaments at the lower level. He has eight titles to his name on the ITF and Challenger level. The 23 year old has played close to 500 matches in his career already.

The only thing that he may have to guard against is fatigue. This will be his ninth match in the last 19 days which means he is almost playing a competitive match every second day.

Mikhail Kukushkin v Pedro Martinez Prediction and Tip

Despite Kukushkin having more experience and being higher in the rankings, it is the Spaniard who is the favourite here. Martinez is playing some really good tennis at the moment and Kukushkin will find it though to match his athleticism and consistency.

Tip: Martinez to win: 1/2 (bet365)
