Elena Rybakina v Fiona Ferro Head to Head

There has been one previous match played between Rybakina and Ferro and it came earlier this year at the St. Petersburg Open. Rybakina had won it in straight sets on her way to the final, one of the five title-deciders she has reached this season.

Rybakina Crushes Cirstea

After a poor re-start to tennis following the resumption of tennis, Rybakina looked to have finally found her own at the Strasbourg Open last week. Having earlier made the third round at the Italian Open, she pushed on to reach the final in Strasbourg, winning four successive matches in a row, without dropped a set.

And then for the fourth time this season, Rybakina lost the final, going down fighting to Elina Svitolina, in three sets.

The overall feeling, however, would have been deeply satisfying for a player who is hunting for a place in the top 10 of the ranking charts. More so because of her record on clay otherwise, having made it to five of her seven finals on hard court surfaces and just two on clay.

Rybakina did win her first WTA title on clay though, beating Patricia Maria Tig in the final of the Bucharest Open last year and that same form was on display in her first round win over Sorana Cirstea as she dropped just three games en route a place in the second round.

Ferro 6-0 Post Pandemic

That’s correct, Ferro has won six matches in a row since the season resumed after the pandemic and this hasn’t been a case of winning matches at the lower level. Ferro was the winner of the first ever tournament played after the break, defeating a string of top players at the Palermo Open.

With victories over Ekaterina Alexandrova, Sara Errani, Camila Giorgi and then Anett Kontaveit in the final, Ferro looked in imperious touch throughout that tournament but did not feature in any of the tournaments following that. The reason? A rib edema.

Going into this French Open, Ferro had been able to resume practice only a couple of weeks before the start of the tournament, but she showed she had enough fire in her belly to get past Britain’s Heather Watson in her opener.

While the Frenchwoman missed two set-points in her opening set, she calmly completed the straight-set win 7-6, 6-4 to carve out a place in the second round of the French Open for only the second time in her career.

Can she now emulate her previous best Grand Slam showing of a third round appearance, something she had managed at the 2019 US Open? An in-form Rybakina will make that very hard.

Rybakina v Ferro Prediction and Tip

Rybakina starts off at 4/11 to win this and 10/11 to do that in straight sets. Looking at a match result and game combo here.
