Ons Jabeur v Nao Hibino Head to Head

This will be the first time that the 35th-ranked Jabeur and Hibino, ranked 72nd in the world, will be fighting against each other.

Jabeur Overcomes Early Hurdles

While Jabeur announced herself to the world this year with her quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open and another such run at the Qatar Open, it was always going to be interesting to see how she made that pivot towards clay.

As it turned out, she had the misfortune of getting drawn with Cori Gauff in her Italian Open first round, and the precocious youngster had no trouble beating Jabeur in straight sets.

Even in her first round match against Zarina Diyas here, the signs that clay isn’t her strongest suit, have been there. What was also on display was her gritty, never-say-die attitude which should help her through come the sterner tests ahead.

Jabeur was broken early in the first set, before levelling it 4-4 and only losing the very next service game. With Diyas serving for the first set, Jabeur had four chances to break back in a game that lasted nine deuces but in the end her opponent came through to win the opening set.

The Tunisian fought back to break Diyas in the eighth game of the second set, and having smelled blood, she then crashed through her opponent’s defences to carve out three more breaks of serve in the final set.

Hibino Continues Good Form

After an early qualifier loss at the Italian Open, Japan’s Hibino opted to feature in the Strasbourg Open in the lead-up to this Grand Slam. And for someone who has never made it to the final of a clay court event at both the lower and senior circuit, the Japanese world number 72 won three matches in a row to enter the semifinal there.

More vitally, the run included wins over Sloane Stephens, Zarina Diyas and Jelena Ostapenko, before she fell to Elena Rybakina in the last-four round.

And with that kind of form under her belt, Hibino managed to win her first ever main draw match at the French Open as well, defeating Marta Kostyuk in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. The match lasted all of 58 minutes and saw Hibino break her young opponent’s serve a whopping six times.

There’s one thing to look at though; Hibino was aided by her opponent’s 29 unforced errors in the match and that might not be something she can expect too much of from a player of the calibre of Jabeur. Would she be able to carve out her own points?

Jabeur v Hibino Prediction and Tip

We are backing Jabeur to win this and emulate her best ever French Open showing which came in 2017 – a third round. Might even be a straightforward win.

Tip: Jabeur to win in straight sets: 11/10 (bet365)
