Monteiro Outclasses Basilashvili in Opener

Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro knocked out the 31st-seed Nikoloz Basilashvili in the first round of the French Open on Tuesday.

Runner-up at the Challenger event in Forli (Italy) last week, Monteiro was in great form against the Georgian needing just 2 hours and 5 minutes to win the contest 7-5, 6-4, 6-2.

The unseeded left-hander converted four of eight break point chances and wasn’t broken even once in a dominating first-round performance.

A clay court specialist, the Brazilian was very disciplined against Basilashvili, not committing a single double fault in the entire match and making just 15 unforced errors.

Winner of the Challenger Punta del Este in Uruguay earlier this year, Monteiro also reached the quaretrfinals of the Argentina Open and Chile Open in 2020. This is the third time that he is in the second round of a Grand Slam, having reached the stage at the French Open and Wimbledon in 2017 and looks set for his best-ever major showing in Paris this year.

Giron Holds Nerves To Beat Halys

America’s Marcos Giron held his nerves to edge our French wildcard Quentin Halys in a 4-hour-and-22-minute first-round encounter on Tuesday.

Giron, who took the first set, found himself 1-2 down after the third before fighting back to win the match 7-5, 3-6, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 8-6.

The 27-year-old right-hander, who a few weeks ago won his maiden Grand Slam main draw match against Australia’s Marc Polmans in New York, was one of eight Americans to qualify for the second round at Roland Garros this year.

The World No. 96, who reached a career high ranking of 93 earlier this month, has two Challenger and six Futures titles, but all of them have come on hard courts.

Monteiro v Giron Prediction and Tip

The Brazilian loves to play on clay, and has produced good results on the surface this year, so expect him to advance to the Round of 32 with a straight sets win.

Tip: Monteiro to win in straight sets: 10/11 (bet365)
