Elina Svitolina and Iga Swiatek entered the fourth round of the 2020 French Open by overcoming their respective opponents in straight sets on Friday.
Svitolina, the third seed, overcame Ekaterina Alexandrova in her third round match, winning 6-4, 7-5 in a match that went on for an hour and 40 minutes.
In a tight match with very little to separate the two players, Svitolina saved the only break-point of the first set before breaking Alexandrova in the 10th game which won her the set.
The second set saw an early exchange of broken serves but after that it all went on serve till Alexandrova had to serve to stay in the match but was broken to 15 to bow out in straight sets.
The Ukrainian will face one of Elise Mertens or Caroline Garcia in round four.
Meanwhile in another match lasting an hour and 14 minutes, Swiatek broke Bouchard six times to claim a 6-3, 6-2 win over the former world number five.
Swiatek got a break of serve in the very first game of the opening set and while Bouchard broke her back to level things off at 2-2, she dropped her serve to love the very next game.
The world number 54 then held on without any issues before winning the set on Bouchard’s serve in the ninth game.
An early break followed in the second set for Swiatek again and while Bouchard retaliated back to make it 2-2, that was all she would win in the match. Swiatek ran off to two more breaks of serve and four games in a row to carve out the fourth spot of a Grand Slam for the third time in her career.
She will now take on the winner of the match between Simona Halep and Amanda Anisimova.
