Dominic Thiem v Hugo Gaston Head to Head

There have been no previous matches played between Thiem and Gaston, who recently turned 20.

The Thiem Party is Only Warming Up

With a title at the US Open, Thiem opted not to play in any of the clay court events following the American hard-court swing and it was a call fraught with its own dangers. After all, Thiem had played just one clay court competition on tour all season, at Rio, and lost the quarterfinal there.

Since then Thiem has been involved in multiple exhibition clay court competitions though and that has, in all probability, helped him take that break between the US Open win and his trip to Roland-Garros.

Because, to be honest, he did look spent at that final, having gone through what would have a physically and emotionally draining experience of winning your first Grand Slam amidst the rules around the pandemic bubble.

Coming to the French Open, the two-time finalist here has had three of the toughest first three round opponents you could expect for a third seed. Marin Cilic is a former Grand Slam winner, Jack Sock has upset a few opponents on his day while Casper Ruud is a clay-court specialist and a youngster who has carved out a name for himself this season with back to back semifinals at the Rome Masters and the Strasbourg Open.

All three were dispatched by Thiem in straight sets. The third of those names, Ruud, who faced up to Thiem in the third round, lasted two hours and a quarter, and saw the Austrian squeeze his opponent as the match went on. In the end, he finished a 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 winner and will now face a 239th-ranked opponent.

Much deserved for Thiem, to play a low-ranked player after those three rounds.

Stan Stunned by Houdini Hugo

A straight-set win to start off the proceedings in the first round was followed by a four-set victory over Yoshihito Nishioka but little did anyone think Hugo would pull off a Houdini over Stan Wawrinka.

Wawrinka had come into the tournament with some decent performances on clay and was tipped to be one of the dark horses of the tournament behind the top favourites, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Thiem.

Instead he was toppled out of the third round by the 20-year-old Gaston who overcame a set deficit and then a Wawrinka comeback in the fourth set, with the Frenchman delivering a bitter bagel to the Swiss number two.

The three-hour-10-minute match saw both players match on their first and second serve statistics, with Wawrinka even hitting 49 winners to Gaston’s 35 but the French player was assisted in no small way by his opponent’s unforced errors. At important stages of the encounter, Wawrinka struggled to maintain control and dished out 74 unforced errors, 18 of which came in the third set alone.

Gaston has already earned himself his biggest pay-cheque and ranking points but if he wants to make a match out of this upcoming encounter, he will have to do more than hope Thiem will err.

Because on current form that looks very unlikely.

Thiem v Gaston Prediction and Tip

A 1/33 favourite to win it and 1/3 to do that in straight sets, Thiem has looked unstoppable all tournament. And yet there have been times he has looked vulnerable to lose a set and that’s what we can expect at the most for Gaston. Bit of a risky punt below.

Tip: Thiem to win AND Both players to win a set: 9/4 (bet365)
