Pre-Match Update

3 pm local time

The two players have made their way out and Novak Djokovic has won the toss and opted to serve first.

That’s a good start. Probably.

2.30 pm local time

Nadal is the 12-time French Open champion and yet, there is a strong set of fans who believe Djokovic will hold the edge in this final on clay. And that’s to do with the manner in which the world number one has thundered past most of his opponents in the recent past.

Even Stefanos Tsitsipas, who came back from the near-dead in his semifinal against Djokovic, to then lose in five sets, said the world number one is playing a game of near-perfection. How else do you describe a man who has won every completed match on tour this year? His only defeat? That default at the US Open.

Let’s not count out Nadal though. He might not have looked at his best – and that’s because his best has been a league about most of the rest – but the Spaniard has still managed to find a way to get past his opponents. All of them in straight sets too.

Nadal’s biggest test was expected to come in the semifinal when he faced Diego Schwartzman, a man who had beaten him in the last tournament he played. It had been a sterling showing from Schwartzman to send Nadal packing out of that Rome Masters quarterfinal but would he be able to mount that same challenge in a best-of-five setter?

No. Nadal came up with renewed showing, allowed very little by the way of chances and aided by a tiring Schwartzman – from his toughie against Dominic Thiem in the quarterfinal – he fell away in three sets.

Does that change things for Nadal in the final? Probably not.

Djokovic poses a threat like no other but given he has been on court for far lesser than Djokovic, it could give him that slight edge. Because he would also know and felt what Tsitsipas did – Djokovic is playing at a near-perfect level.
